Drunkenclam
Erm.. They are both add-on sets with no motor? :) Err no. The Kato isn't just an add on set. I also meant in the real world :D Link to comment

cteno4
Ah so all the words can just be run together to make a new one? I do like the idea of a super hover as I'm always shocked at how much stuff the tomix can suck up. Jeff Link to comment

It's an earlier (pre-1993, possibly pre-1990 judging by the postcode) version of this from "Lux Modellbau". I'd never heard of them before but they must be doing fairly well as they've been in business all this time. Slight downside to the brush is that it catches and retains some of the fluffier dust and deposits it on points, so a run with the Tomix model might be needed afterwards. Link to comment

beakaboy
well! I just completed an order with Hobbylink .Probably my last! I was mainly after the Microace chassis on special, but added a few other items. Turned out the EMS freight charge was 4260Yen and SAL was about 5100yen. I queried the amount and was referred to the increase by Japan post to EMS charges. My last order from Hobbysearch in April of this year was SAL amount of 1580Yen. It had bulkier items than this order. From memory the EMS was about 2000yen. I will be interested to see how much air they have packed around my goods when the box arrives. cteno4
Beakaboy Sorry this happened. Sounds like you ran over the 2kg and size limits where the shipping costs on Sal goes way up along with EMS now. If you use their virtual warehouse you can fiddle with splitting the order up into the most economical Sal shippments, I've done this many times. I've compared the same shippment costs with HS and generally they are the same in my experience, A couple of times their fedex shipping has been a good alternative when Sal is getting up there and faster than EMS to the states! cteno4
so I tried your shopping cart and it was 5100 yen for Sal, 4260 yen for EMS and 2460 yen fedex (but don't know if nz has that option). Drop one of the rm models mags and shipping goes down to 1680 yen Sal. So it's the magizine Pushing it up in one box. Magizines can be the killer on shipping, Jeff Edited June 23, 2016 by cteno4 Link to comment
beakaboy
cheers Jeff. I knew I should have forgotten about the mags. I know people on the forum have commented before about the high prices for shipping heavy mags. I should have tried what you did and dropped some mags. Drat! Lesson learned. Link to comment
katoftw
I got burnt once on a single 300 yen magazine being ordered. It made the order from a small 10x10x10cm box to a 29x20x10cm size box. And shipping when from 880 to 1680 yen. Was only 75g more, but the total volume of the box was the killer. I dont order magazines now unless I know the current order will already be a larger box. Pauljag900
Hi gents beakaboy, I did the same I placed an order with Nariichi last year and then asked him to add on two mags, with the post it was more than the rest of the order so I left them,I could have bought a train for the same money.post has gone ridiculous all over the world lately ! The good thing tho is that it s still cheaper than buying over here and that s assuming you can get them, whatever it is! Edited June 23, 2016 by Pauljag900 2 Link to comment
Welshbloke
My 11-200 turned up. I'm assuming others have one or more of these. Does yours growl loudly? It runs smoothly enough and had decent slow speed control, but makes horrible growling grinding sounds. I've oiled every bearing and also paid a bit of attention to the hexagonal end of one driveshaft with a file (as it was a ridiculously tight fit, so couldn't slide easily within the flywheel). That helped, but it's still very loud for such a little EMU! Given that I understand the real thing's nickname (getaden) came from the growling noises they made, I did wonder if this was some sort of analogue sound unit... It's currently circulating with my KuMoNi13, which was a similarly noisy beast at first but seems to be calming down with more running. Hopefully the two of them will run in together. Link to comment
cteno4
cheers Jeff. I knew I should have forgotten about the mags. I know people on the forum have commented before about the high prices for shipping heavy mags. I should have tried what you did and dropped some mags. Drat! Lesson learned. Yeah it is a big bummer to have the shipping of many mags be more than the mag! Well at least you will have the mags to parouse! Amazon.jp use to have a great deal of 1500 yen for the first book or mag and 300 yen for each additional one and it was fedex 2 day! We use to get a number of club members together on orders and ace like 400 yen shipping each which was reasonable! I do fiddle with odd things putting them in a cart to see the shipping and roughly how they will cost. The one nice thing about hlj is once you have an account and are signed in, whenever you look at your cart it shows the current shipping options and cost. HS you have to go thru most of the checkout to get that. Hlj also has the virtual warehouse which is nice if you have a pile of stuff as you can created individual shippments to get the best shipping option/price. I take it they don't have the FedEx option to nz or it was pricy. Now seems pretty good on those over 2kg orders and it's faster then EMS to the states! Enjoy the mags and don't let their shipping cost ruin the enjoyment! Jeff 1 Link to comment

Cheers, Nxcale. sure will provide some pics of the layout once package arrives. I already have 2 different versions of the sub(well, 1 is super detailed and the other is more basic) I was planning on adding a scene in my port (another project!!) of a research type ship loading the sub and maybe another sub being tested near the ship with a giant octopus attacking it. HaHa! Just a thought. They are fantastic detailed miniatures at a very cheap price. 1 Link to comment
NXCALE
Thanks beakaboy, I will be checking for those pics. Those stairs (from the magazine cover) of that station requires a serious analisys. Wow, you did all that and it's still making noise. I've come to accept that some trains just won't run as quietly, one of my new Kato 115-800 runs noisily but the 115-300 is so quiet. My 2 Tomix Tobu 100's, one runs quietly and the other noisily. Though they make noise, they all run smoothly from what I can tell. I've always been curious as to what other people's methods are of breaking in new trains? I myself do 5 minutes of slow running, less than 50% power and then another 5 minutes of varied speeds. I would always run the single motor car by itself before running it with the rest of the train. Link to comment
JR 500系
A box came in from HS today... Talk about fast! I queried the amount and was referred to the increase by Japan post to EMS charges. Since the rate increase of June 1 you have to be very careful when selecting a shipping method. There is SAL and SAL Parcel which is more expensive than EMS in many cases. Checkout the Hobby Search shipping chart. At 2000g your choices are: SAL Small Packet 2080 SAL Registered 2490 SAL Parcel 3850 EMS 4500 SAL Parcel is frequently more expensive than EMS. At 1250g its 3300 for EMS and 3850 for SAL Parcel. At 1750g its 4100 for EMS and 3850 for SAL Parcel. Link to comment
katoftw
You should only be using SAL Parcel for over 2kg when SAL Small Packet isn't available. As EMS will do all weights up to 30kg, SAL Small Packet does not do 2kg to 30kg. So SAL parcel needs to be used. It is the same as EMS, but just cheaper and slower. Link to comment
