JR 500系
Another very small parcel from Ami Ami today... The tents were on offer and they can fit on most fairs in the layout so grabbed a couple of them... Now my E231-500 is complete! The flag ship train of Metropolitan Tokyo! :) 5 Link to comment

The flag ship train of Metropolitan Tokyo! :) Nice, a train that pretty much all of us have ridden on, if you haven't rode an E231-500 on the Yamanote line then you have never been to Tokyo. ToniBabelony
Ordered a Silhouette Portrait today. Not really train related, but you have no idea how many buildings and rolling stock I'm going to put out with this thing! I can't begin to start to imagine where the combinations of 3D printing and 2D plotting will lead me! This means that larger rolling stock will be more feasible, as the size of 3D printed models heavily influences pricing. With 2D plotting, only the size of the machine limits the output. The DIN A4 format of the Portrait seems plenty big for N-scale :) 1 Link to comment
Welshbloke
The TM-08R for my Chichibu Railway 1000 Series arrived a couple of days ago, not had a chance to do much more than fit it and a quick test, but it seems a cut above the other Tomytec mechanisms (TM-14 and TM-18) I already have, it's much better at pulling away smoothly from rest for a start. I'll get a test oval up next week and video it compared to my Kato "Kokuden" 103 Series, it's an old JNR 101 Series under new ownership after all. Link to comment
Eurostar25
A small collection of bits and pieces picked up from my recent 10 day trip, albeit with probably only 2 hours of opportunity to head to a hobby store of some kind. My wife was surprised when I said I don't have any space left in my baggage, given she noticed my bag was only half full when we were packing the night before departure. A lot of items lost their packaging in an effort to preserve space. Tomytec sell you a large amount of yacht fuel in their diorama series boxes. Most of them I found you could squeeze 2 of the same item into. Kato's platform set also had lots of space for small track pieces. The Kato viaduct pieces also lost their package and if you place the track on top of each other they halve in size. Really wanted to kick up a Greenmax Toyoko inn but it was just too big to carry back. 4 Link to comment

JR 500系
I saw the same magazine with the 313 series on it that IST's friend posted to him from Okinawa ~ :) That's a neat lot, but I think you should have grabbed that GreenMax Toyoko Inn as it will cost quite a fair bit to ship it over. When going to Japan to buy, I always go for those items that are otherwise expensive to ship over; such as large and heavy items like the Tomix controller or catalogues or books, or those that are not available for international sales; like second-hand train sets or special edition sets from shops that do not do international shipping... The idea of the Tomytec boxes are a marketing gimmick that many companies use, such as Lego especially. The large boxes make people feel that the item is more worth it than it looks, but in actual fact we are paying for the air in the boxes. So it's a GREAT idea to remove the boxes and only carry the contents back ~ :) Let me share my lot from Japan last year ~ 1 Link to comment

Eurostar25
@Das - I should really invest in a bigger bag... @jr500 - yeah I was thinking the same hence the Kato controller was top of my list due to weight. I figured buy what I needed for this and another module and save the Toyoko inn for next time when I build the module that requires it. The magazine is excellent, full of colour photos and not a bad cost. Plenty to choose from over there but a lot had black and white photos, I like this series and I've bought it in the past @Paul - I'll get it one day! Although they were already pretty hard to find while I was over there so yeah I may end up regretting not picking it up when I saw it Link to comment

I tend to keep the unused ones in the original boxes, in case I want to sell them on, but once opened I pack all the remaining bits (I very rarely end up using the entirety of a kit) into ziplock baggies together with the picture cut out of the box, compresses them down enormously. 2 Link to comment

Welshbloke
Got my Tomytec Chichibu Railway 1000 Series out for some exercise, seen here next to one of my Kokuden 103 Series: The TM-08R chassis seems much better than the TM-14 and TM-18, although as with anything mass produced I may have just got an unusually good one. It pulls away far more smoothly than the other Tomytecs I have. I fitted the motor to the centre car as is usually advised, and used the short coupler extension pieces throughout. It would probably be ok without them but this way it matches the spacing of the Kokuden and my "full fat" Kato Yamanote 103 Series. 6 Link to comment
