Drat!!!

I particular unit I have been after for a while - the single car Kiha 110 - suddenly turned up at my local shop. Hurrah thought I, you can't get this for love nor money, and for £42.00 my wallet very quickly came out.  :cheesy

On the off-chance I asked for a quick test run. DISASTER UPON DISASTER! It didn't move. The lights work, but after a a short spurt, nothing. It is now sitting at their workshop to see if a quick repair can be carried out, otherwise they will have to order another one from Kato HQ. That is if Kato have another one in stock....

Kato stuff normally works straight out of the box - this is a very unwelcome first

Those 110's are impossible to find too. Great train, still, it might be salvageable. Worst case scenario might need a rebuilding. Not sure what replacement internal parts for KATO cost, as all my problems revolve around Growly, but the TOMIX parts are cheap, so it might not be much to rebuild the KATO.

As I recall, there is nothing special about the motor or drive shafts or worm gears in that model; you might even be able to source the parts from Kato USA/MG Sharp, if they are the same as used in the Budd RDC! I can't imagine what else could be wrong with it; it really is a simple design.

Not totally true, they are impossible to find in store since Kato don't produce them anymore but they are a quite common item on Yahoo Auctions.

At an inflated 300% mark up.

It depends, I've seen a 4 car set goes away for 5000 Yen and I've also seen a 2 car set been sold for 6000. Of course at the end it cost you a lot more but it's not so expensive.

I would go back to the retailer since he is local and explain the problem. It might be difficult and/or time consuming for the retailer to send it back to the manufacture. He knows you are interested and might give a portion of your money back since it isn't work and than use that portion to by the parts you need to fix it.
