The Next Station Is...
At the request of Ken, here are photos of my Hakone Tozan Railway MoHa 2 model by Tomytec. I picked this up on my last trip to Japan after travelling on the Hakone Tozan, although it was the MoHa 1 that I travelled on which I believe is Hakone Tozan's oldest unit still in operation on the railway. This model set me back something like ¥6000 from Hobbyland Pochi in Akihabara, which is probably quite expensive for an unmotorised Tomytec model, but it was quite hard and I imagine Hakone Tozan rolling stock is quite popular. 2 Link to comment
Ken Ford
Thank you! The photo of the back really helps - I can see what chassis it uses. I'm having a hard time determining what the part number is for the cars, but they shouldn't be hard to find. Now that I know what they are I've seen them on Yahoo Japan - the box is distinctive. Have you ever had a chance to compare them to Modemo's version? Link to comment

Wow, I paid 8,000 yen for the Modemo version (motorized, metal pantographs, working forward light). Admittedly a 2nd hand 2004 version, but in perfect condition. Link to comment
Guest keio6000
our friend, that's a wonderful set as far as tomytec goes, but i can't say you got the best deal (unless that price includes postage to the UK + vat/duty). i hope i do not negatively tint your purchase by stating that i would have held out to find the modemo RTR release on yahoo jp. i dont know how much the "classic" color version you got goes for, but the derivative blue one is on yahoo japan now for a buy it now price of 5600 yen. while it is true that motor is "slippy" and that actually in some respects the tomytec might have some slight plusses in terms of detail, in my view the RTR, lit nature of the modemo offering is hard to beat. http://page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f151074645 there's an auction to watch - let's see what the price goes to. i have this set as well, though i haven't acutally taken it out of its box in 10 years (though by golly i intend to!). still. whatever the cost you'll soon forget that (it's just a few pints anyway) and you have a wonderful new addition to your collection. well done and enjoy! 3 Link to comment

Though it would have been nice to find MoHa 1... swings and roundabouts indeed.. let me tell you about the JPY 5000 yen kato 10-car TGV pse i picked up in tokyo last time :). and just now that microace fukutoshin 7000 that i was so happy to find on ebay from china - the seller just emailed telling me it was a listing mistake :( (believable, since the photos were a mix of two trains). so it goes.. Ken Ford
The MoHa3s are all off roster now, correct? For current day (late 2014 - 2015) I'd want only rebuilt MoHa1s and MoHa2s in the silver door scheme? The Hakone Tozan Wiki page leaves me with more roster questions than answers. I wish now I had taken Japanese in high school instead of advanced placement drug usage. Link to comment
kvp
MoHa3-s are out. There are two types in use, the single cab, two car fixed consist versions (formed from moha1-s) and the double cab solo versions (moha2-s). The usual way to run them was either as double only two car or double + solo three car trains. Afaik there is one (or two) moha2-s remaining and a maximum of 2 two car sets from the moha1 type. This gives us a theoretical maximum of 6 old cars, two doubles and one or two solos. Moha2-108 was still running in 2008, so this might be the surviving moha2. (modemo and tomytec released this car, modemo in multiple paints) Moha1-103/107 got the steel doors, so they might be still around. (both modemo and tomytec released these cars, modemo with and without the steel doors) This leaves the fate of the other 2 car moha1 unit (104/106) in the air and i've seen a few recent pictures of moha2-110 with steel doors, so it might still exist. For current paints, there are the steel door ones, the normal door ones and the single 108 unit with the classic Kintaro paint. If you want a nice pool, then getting a steel door double set (103/107), a normal door double set (104/106), a steel door single (110) and the kintaro paint single (108) will give you two 3 car trains or three 2 car trains, depending on the platform size of the layout you want to run them on. ps: Since there are a few new cars on the line, some of the old units could get scrapped because of them. 1 Link to comment
Ken Ford
I'd like to put together a three car set of the MoHas - time to image search recent pics to find numbers. Thank you for the information! Link to comment
zartan
I rode 103 back in November. Here it is arriving in Tonosawa (the most interesting and unusual train station I've ever been to thanks to the fact that you have to climb on foot into the mountains to get to it, the extensive shrine, and the proliferation of massive spiders lurking everywhere): https://plus.google.com/photos/116829734893161258908/albums/6082085388181447073/6082089932184061922?banner=pwa&pid=6082089932184061922&oid=116829734893161258908 Here are the unused controls in the second car, in case anyone's interested: https://plus.google.com/photos/116829734893161258908/albums/6082085388181447073/6082089949902169314?banner=pwa&pid=6082089949902169314&oid=116829734893161258908 1 Link to comment

Just noticed the interesting tree-like paint job on these catenary supports! I have a section of my layout that was inspired by Hakone, maybe I'll replicate this...
