Sacto1985
The 0 and 100 Series trainsets had restaurant cars because before 1992, the fastest service was the Hikari train, which took nearly seven hours to go from Tokyo to Hakata Stations! It was the introduction of the 300 Series in 1992 and the 500 Series in 1997 that the Shinkansen trainsets no longer had restaurant cars because for the much faster travel time between Tokyo and Hakata Stations using the newer Nozomi service. 1 Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Granted, very few people actually take the shinkansen all the way from Tokyo to Hakata. Most fly. Link to comment
Sacto1985
Granted, very few people actually take the shinkansen all the way from Tokyo to Hakata. Most fly. Especially nowadays with the healthy competition between ANA, JAL and a number of low-cost airlines flying between the Tokyo area and Fukuoka Airport, which interestingly is not that far from JR West Hakata Station. Small wonder why the Fukuoka to Kitakyushu area is experiencing a population boom akin to Tokyo and why even JR West is planning a major reconstruction project at Shimonoseki Station, a station fairly far from the nearest Shinkansen station.
