cteno4
Christopher hood is very knowledgable in Japanese rail and a very nice chap. His dissertation (I think it was that) was turned into a book on Shinkansen history that unfortunately is quite expensive... http://www.amazon.com/Shinkansen-Bullet-Symbol-Routledge-Contemporary/dp/0415320526/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413597927&sr=8-1&keywords=Christopher+hood+Shinkansen Anyhow anyone in London on the 31 oct: Public Seminar 50 Years of the Shinkansen Date: 31 October, 6:30pm–8pm Venue: Japan Foundation, Russell Square House, 10-12 Russell Square, WC1B 5EH The Japan Foundation is delighted to present this special public seminar marking the 50thanniversary of the Tokaido Shinkansen. bikkuri bahn
...examine the regional differences in design and usage of the Shinkansen and how this in turn reflects the diversity of Japanese cultures. Without getting into the touchey feeley humanities aspect, maybe it's just companies trying to be competitive by being responsive to the needs of their customers. The same can be said of rail service differences between Kanto, Kansai, and Tokai. Edited October 18, 2014 by bikkuri bahn Link to comment
