cteno4
Interesting note from profit of the way on the jtrains list. On September 26th 1954, the JNR Seikan Ferry Toya-maru capsized off Hakodate due after having been fanned by powerful winds from Typhoon #15 ("Marie"). 1153 lives were lost in the accident, the worst marine disaster in Japan during peacetime. Four other ships were lost on the same day with an additional 275 casualties. The tragedy prompted JNR and the government to seriously consider construction of a tunnel between Honshu and Hokkaido.
