I wonder what the current status for possible extension to the ETCS zone will be in the future, been a few years in the running without a lot of news going on.

Afaik the plan is to add ETCS to all routes that are usable by trains with european transit loading gauge. This will allow freight trains to be moved directly to a new interchange yard in east London. ETCS is required so that all cross border traffic capable european locomotives could use the line without modifications.
