1954G
I was thinking of adding a MicroAce Kiha23/45/53 Metropolitan Area Color 3-car Set to my fleet, but I am a bit unfamiliar with the prototype. Specifically, I'd love to know where (lines and/or major cities) this neat train used to run. Micro Ace says it's a JR West train, but more details would be nice. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10059081 http://www.microace-arii.co.jp/release/pdf/A2560R.pdf Edited August 5, 2014 by 1954G Link to comment
kvp
The links seem broken, but the cars in question are JNR standard disel railcars, so they were used on most JNR diesel lines and afaik all jr companies received at least a few of them. (active years: 1965-2003) I can't find which lines used the trains in these exact consists, but the same types are all over Japan on various old photographs. I think the best match for the full orange cars in a 3 car formation is this photo: http://www.jnr-photo.com/DC45/kiha45/kiha4510a.JPG made in 1985 at Sendai station, so just before the privatisation. 1 Link to comment

Ah, quite informative, thanks! The photo you posted is encouraging, since I have other trains from the same era/region. By the way, I fixed the links. Link to comment

kvp
Could this be the kiha 45-55 we are looking for? (third photo) http://www.railstation.net/hyon/063tsuma/01.html 岩国駅から岩日線に乗車。フィルムをけちって一コマのみの撮影・・・キハ45-55 広クニ 532D/岩日線錦町駅 Edited August 6, 2014 by kvp 1 Link to comment
1954G
E6, thank you for the links. While MicroAce's description indicated that the Kihas I purchased are no longer in service, it's interesting to know that very similar formations (color/general appearance) could still be seen operating as late as 2012. The caption on the photo that kvp posted indicates that it was taken in Iwakuni. It looks like a very attractive area to model; we don't have mountains like that here in Chicago. Again, I appreciate everyone's detective work. My mind is swimming in Kiha facts now! Link to comment
