YouTube member ato5kgyasetaito filmed this zenmen tenbou video of the JR Kyushu Chikuhi Line going west from Meinohama to Nishi-Kuratsu Stations from a JR Kyushu 303 Series EMU:

Note that this train is actually the western part of the Kūkō Line subway on the Fukuoka City Subway system, where the line becomes the Chikuhi Line at Meinohama Station. This line will get the new JR Kyushu 305 Series EMU starting in 2015 to replace the older 103 Series EMU's.

By the way, I should mention this line is kind of unusual for Kyushu, since the overhead power is 1500 V DC (most zairaisen trains running on overhead electric power in Kyushu use 20,000 V AC).

So you merge a 303 into a 817, and you gat a 305?

Hello Mr katoftw,

This is not quite correct.  The first number:

  • 1 - 3 is can only run on DC current, eg: 115系, 205系, 311系
  • 4 - 6 is equipped with inverter and can run on AC or DC current, eg: 415系, 583系 653系
  • 7 - 8 is can only run on AC current, eg: 715系 and 883系.
  • 9 is reserved for trial car.

Thus, it is not possible to run series 1 - 3 and 7 - 8 on the same track and not prototypically correct to do so on a model railway.  But your statement would be correct if the new train was, for example, 405系.
