Nick_Burman
http://www.britishpathe.com/video/3-trains-pile-up-in-crash-aka-three-trains-pile-up/query/tokyo Images from the train crash at Mikawashima station, Arakawa, Tokyo, 1962. A freight train on the Joban freight line ignored a red signal and derailed on the trap switch before the entrance to the main line. However, the locomotive fouled the main line and a commuter train ploughed into it. Not long after, a second commuter train smashed into the wreckage. This accident was what prompted JNR to start adopting ATS on its lines in a large scale. Cheers NB 2 Link to comment

Jcarlton
What made this wreck sort of unique is that unlike previous wrecks, where the top JNR management resigned in apology without actually addressing the problem, Shinji Sogo and his team stayed on and continued to work on solving the ongoing and severe problems of the JNR system. One of the solutions was, of course the Tokaido Shinkansen. Link to comment
Guest ___
I would not want to be on the ass end of a Shinji Sogo ass chewing. Link to comment
Jcarlton
They called him "Old Man Thunder" for a reason. The interesting thing is that he did his greatest work at the age of which most men would have long retired. Link to comment
