In Seattle, a rat's nest of wires

Just got back from a 10-day trip to the Pacific Northwest.

On Broadway, they have recently added streetcar tracks (a consolation prize to the First Hill crowd for deleting their LRT stop).

They have added these streetcar tracks onto a street which already had electric trolley buses.

To this they have then added a bicycle track (!)

I have a slight feeling quite a few of those aren't installed by the official companies ;)

The frightening thing is that actually they were installed by the local service companies. But their standards are slightly different from what we know.

Btw, the Seattle wire nest isn't that bad and seems to be the result of a patch. If they ever replace the load bearing wires, they could change it to a nice clean solution, where the whole crossing is suspended on 4 wires in a rectangle pattern with 2 cross wires for tensioning the two turns and holding up the center. This only needs 4 poles, one on each corner or they could even be connected to mounting points on the buildings, since these wires are isolated from the running wires.

The wires on Broadway are only used by the #9, which will be made redundant by the streetcar. In theory you could dewire it once the streetcars start running.

But it's also the only wired crosstown route, everything else shunts you into the Downtown grid. So that wouldn't really be good from a network robustness perspective.
