Guest ___
Total smoking ban starts on JR limited, express trains on Honshu Monday 01st June, 11:16 AM JST TOKYO — A total smoking ban started Monday on limited and express trains operated by Japan Railway group companies on Honshu, the biggest of Japan’s four main islands, making most JR trains smoke-free across the nation. With the step by East Japan Railway Co, Central Japan Railway Co and West Japan Railway Co, smoking cars are available only on sleeper trains and Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen bullet trains and on some trains running on Shikoku, one of the four main islands. A total smoking ban has already been introduced on JR trains on Hokkaido and Kyushu, the remaining two main islands. Services newly subject to the total smoking ban Monday include trains crossing the operating boundaries of the JR companies. A total smoking ban had been introduced on almost all trains excluding those serving Shinkansen lines but it took time for the JR companies to apply the ban to trains serving several operating areas, JR company officials said. © 2009 Kyodo News.
