New Hakone Tozan 3000 Form

New Hakone Tozan rolling stock.  Its a 11 metre long car with a capacity of 75 people (36 seated) and a top speed of 55 Km. Testing begins in September and it will enter service from November 1.  A second vehicle will be completed in August and the two will run as a married pair.

Wha .... ? No disc brakes?  I would have thought that the steep decent would require disc brakes.

The original cars didn't have them either. You just need good motor brakes and good wheel brakes. Also, the classic wheel brakes have a nice side effect to clean the wheels from fallen leaves and other slippery stuff, so together with a good amount of sand they provide better braking power than any disc brake system. The only negative side effects are increased wheel surface abrasion and lots of rust powder around the tracks.
