Densha
When looking at the wiki of the Kintetsu 20000 series I noticed this strange seat: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ファイル:Kintetsu-20000-Supplementary_Seat.jpg More: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/近鉄20000系電車#.E8.BB.8A.E5.86.85.E8.A8.AD.E5.82.99 http://hse.dyndns.org/hiroto/Railway/RAKU/KAKI5.html Link to comment
kvp
I'm pretty sure this is more like a marketing joke than a really usable idea. Folded down, they clearly block the escape routes of the cars and sitting on them looks more unconfortable than sitting on the floor, not to mention the dangers they pose for kids running around. The whole trainset looks like a marketing idea, that somehow seems a bit flawed to me, but the train has a nice paint and the view from the cars must be good. ps: Looking at the older kintetsu trains, they seems to really like double deckers: http://homepage3.nifty.com/yoshiken-exp/imge/kintetsu20000.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/04/Kintetsu_10100_A_at_Kawatikokubu.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/71/Kintetsu_30000_Old_Ver.jpg Edited May 12, 2014 by kvp Link to comment
Mudkip Orange
The whole trainset looks like a marketing idea It's a charter train. So they're not trying to run regularly scheduled services with it. Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Jump seats such as these are also seen on older tour buses (a bit more comfortable that these buttcheek pedestals tho), they are intended for temporary use (obviously), when for some reason the number of passengers exceeds the normal seating capacity. Being that these trains are used for charter runs with few stops, the issue of hampered ingress/egress is relatively minor. Edited May 13, 2014 by bikkuri bahn Link to comment
marknewton
I wonder if these seats are intended to be used by someone who is visiting with another passenger away from their allocated seat, rather than to accomodate excess passengers? Instead of sitting on the armrest of the seat, you'd sit on these things instead. I reckon it would mostly be groups travelling on a charter train, so everybody would know everybody else - so you might wander up and down the train to chat with someone you know. If that's what they're intended for, I think they're a great idea. I say this because I often got into trouble from our train manager for sitting on the armrests and chatting with the passengers when I was back in the carriages... Cheers, Mark. Link to comment

They may very well be. I reckon a good number of these charters involve the imbibing of a not modest amounts of liquor, conducive to mingling... 1 Link to comment
