It's the E1 livery. All of the E4s will be painted into this livery by end of 2015. The yellow/blue will be no more. I think it's a nice paint job, but I'll miss the bold yellow/blue livery..

Tomix needs to release an E4 with all-wheel pickups - it's one of the few sets they haven't updated.

Yap that's the E1 livery alright. The E2 has a much darker blue base and a brighter pink stripe. I think it's only right that the E4 has it's predecessor's colour scheme, since they're both double-decker shinkansens. It's beautiful by the way, but I do still prefer the bold yellow/blue that's so distinct of the E4.

Really agree the re-release with all wheel pick-ups. If Tomix really did that, it may well be the trigger to push me to change all my E series to Tomix. I've recently been really contemplating with this idea as I really would like an E4 to couple with a 400 or a 200 to couple with an E3 that's not possible with the Kato. It'll be a really expensive option for me now to change my E series, but the attraction of the all wheel pickup and cheaper interior lighting (not to forget easier to install) is really there...

Sorry for the Off Topic, but I think i'll be hoping to board one of these new coloured E4 next year!  :)

I don't really get why they change liveries barely two years before they are scheduled to be withdrawn from service. Sounds like a mystery to me...

Also, this is actually not even the E1 livery, but the E2 livery. The E1 livery had a white-grayish livery on delivery and was later painted into the E2 livery.

If they're doing repaints of the E4's through 2015, it appears that the original plans to retire them by 2016 may not happen. After all, they're still common sights on the Tanigawa (probably until March 2015) and Toki services on the Jōetsu Shinkansen.

Hhmmm now i'm confused. So do they share the same E1 and E2 livery? They do look strangely familiar...

The original E1 was grey/white w/ green stripe. The refurbished E1 was painted similar to the E2 livery.

The refurbished E1 livery is blue/white w/ "ibis pink" stripe.

The E2 is a similar blue/white but w/ a red or magenta stripe.

The new E4 livery is the refurbished E1 livery, blue/white w/ "ibis pink" stripe.

I miss the original E1系 colours ... in fact ... I miss E1系.

You mean the Grey one?

Actually I like the E2 livery more... The blue with pink stripe really grows on me. Now I want that E4 in the old E2 livery with the new birds! Tomix please, with power couplers?

Off topic a little, I heard the E4 is going to get retired soon next year? I really hope to get on one in Marh 2015... The last Bi-level shinkansen...

From what I've read, the original goal of JR East was to retire all the E4's by March 2016. But if they're doing repaints now, that makes me wonder if the fleet will undergo a mid-level refurbishment to extend their lives (maybe!) another 5-6 years.

Hello Mr JR500,

Yes, that is the E1系 that I miss.

I have ridden E4.  I recommend you try Green Car.  Economy car is quite cramped.  You can use this service when you visit The Railway Museum at Omiya.

Thanks! That means I still have a chance to get on the Bi-level E4!

Thanks E6 san! But I think i'll stick with the normal since it's a short ride from Tokyo to Omiya...

The repaint/wrapping (the toki design is a decal) is part of JR East's "Niigata Destination Campaign" i.e. tourist promotion.

Sweet! In conjuction with the E3-1000 new painting? Now I hope for models for both new paintings for both E3 and E4! While the birds are nice and the colour is sweet, the bold yellow blue is still striking sweet for the E4~~

I wouldn't count on this repaint meaning that they'll keep them any longer than previously stated.

As Miyakoji states.  JR East is consistently replacing E2 units with E5 on the Tohoku Shinkansen, those redundant units will be cascaded to the Joetsu Shinkansen, where they will replace the E4's. The E4's are not the most popular among regular passengers, for the reason E6系 stated.

Indeed.  Also, one of the more minor reasons given for the withdrawal of the 500 series from the Tokaido Shinkansen was passenger complaints that the ceilings were too low closer to the windows (due to the airplane-like body shell cross-section), imparting a claustrophobic feeling, or appakukan (圧迫感).
