Nick_Burman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlK_8pmkhRU Delivering new trains for Hakone Tozan. JRF seems to be unworried about the dummy trucks on the car, given the cracking speed the train is making. The design of the car looks good too. Cheers NB 2 Link to comment
miyakoji
Good catch. On Ompuchaneru I saw an aerial pic of this leaving the Kawasaki plant and I thought it was for a foreign customer. http://rail-uploader.khz-net.com/index.php?id=6180 Link to comment
Guest keio6000
Thanks for that, Nick. Hmm.. not the most attractive train (front end is quite ugly) in the world, but could be a lot worse Clearly with the giant windows (including full-height ones) they are going for a fairly unique passenger experience The relatively new funicular, built to a similar look, is fairly nice: ah the good old days: Edited April 11, 2014 by keio6000 Link to comment
kvp
Do they still run the old units sometimes? Personally i think the hong kong way, where new trams look like the heritage ones is better. If they wanted a full height window car (for the hydrangea trains), they should have ordered one that looks like a moha1 with full height windows added to the sides, but otherwise the classic paint and style. The moha1 and 2 types are iconic for the hakone tozan. (considering how the new romance(subway)cars look like, this new car is not that bad) Link to comment
ToniBabelony
The 'good old days' are still running and will keep on running still. AFAIK, they still run daily. The new trains (3000 type) will replace a few 2000 types from the eighties on 01-11-2014: Link to comment
Densha
The 2000 series look still brand-new though... Link to comment
westfalen
Just when I thought I wouldn't have to go back to the Hakone Tozan because I'd seen it all. :) 1 Link to comment
Densha
Here's it unpacked: http://tetsudo-news.com/article/newtrain/181.html Interior looks nice, but ouch what a horrible taste the exterior is. Link to comment
Mudkip Orange
ouch what a horrible taste the exterior is. The front end looks like an airport people mover from 1976. Link to comment
miyakoji
You guys are being too hard on this. It's a bit unusual, but the big windows are going to be awesome for the passengers. I'm looking forward to zenmen tenbou videos from this model. Possibly even better than JR West 223 series :) I wonder why they only ordered two of these. kvp
I think this style is something they call retro futuristic. The internal layout is clearly old suburban commuter (113/115 series) with the classic bay seats, the laminated wood and the hangers are also 1960-1970 style. I've seen this exact style, internal finish and handles on old east german suburban trains. They even got the small tables too, but the originals were fold down. Also has the old first class red seat cover material that is almost died out in eastern europe and you can only find it in cars that didn't get refurbished since 1989. The sides are a mix of modern rhaetian railways tourist stock and 3rd class railway new railbus. And the front is... let's say the designer had a bad day. It looks like they wanted good front and back visibility from all seats with a high roof and large windscreens, but then somene rembered that the cars also need a pantograph above one of the bogies. The result is uglier than an RhB Ge 4/4 III and you have to try very hard for that. The cars seem to be designed for express/joyful train service, like the classic hydrangea trains and the two cabs mean they are meant to be used in variable length trains, something only the old moha 1 and 2 cars could provide until now. Looking at the equipment under and above the car, it has a very small series, even home made look. Link to comment
The Next Station Is...
I had to check the aspect ratio hadn't been squashed when I saw the front of that in the photos. For me it's the way that front looks out of proportion that is off-putting. Otherwise it's a fairly decent looking train and as a passenger it will probably be a decent train with those large windows. Still, having been on one of the old units, I say you can't beat tradition! Link to comment
