scott
The measurements available on eBay aren't as clear as I'd like--does anybody know if there's a good motorized chassis I can use to replace one that's 127mm (5") long (chassis only; not incl. couplers) and about 15mm wide? Just looking for options for my %#$%$% Tomix 115. Link to comment
scott
Just my luck--*after* I posted, I found this page: http://www.trainweb.org/tomix/ChassisDim.htm Which lists Tomix, Kato, Greenmax, etc. chassis dimensions. Looks like the 120mm Tomix TM-08 or TM-09 would be the closest for me. I'm not sure a body overhang of 3.5mm at each end could lead to more car contacts on curves or not. Link to comment
CaptOblivious
Great site you found!! What style trucks does you model have? Reference: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/国鉄115系電車 You might find that if yours have the DT21 trucks that the Greenmax 5509 works best. Link to comment
scott
What style trucks does you model have? ... You might find that if yours have the DT21 trucks that the Greenmax 5509 works best. Duh..... I'm not sure, but I'll take a look tonight. :) I'd be willing to try the Greenmax, but most of the ones I've seen so far don't have any underbody equipment details, which might look a bit odd. And I can't find a picture or dimensions of the 5509 online anywhere. I'm a bit concerned that the only chassis width shown for a Greenmax model is 17mm--I'm not sure if that's just for one model, or if it's supposed to carry down through that whole column. Most of the measurements seemed right for the Tomix TM-08; on the TM-09 the truck wheelbase was a bit longer than mine. The Greenmax chassis length is closer to right, but since the truck-centers distance is the same for both, I don't know if that will really make the couplers extend any farther beyond the body shell for clearance in curves. scott
BTW, here's a picture of the prototype for my model from that wikipedia.jp site: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AB:L25_Tc115-2127_680.jpg Link to comment
bill937ca
Tomix also offers some power units or power chassis as "parts". http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10085893 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10080109 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10073854 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10071038 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10069448 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10066583 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10063138 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10058679 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10056456 Link to comment
CaptOblivious
Bill, good thought. Indeed, I think this may be the very beast you are looking for, Scott: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10058679 Link to comment
scott
Thanks, Bill! I had looked at Hobbysearch, but completely missed those somehow. Don--the description for that one says it's for 112 and 114 MOHA cars; are they pretty much the same size as 115s? Link to comment
CaptOblivious
If I'm not mistaken—and please, someone stop me if I am—the numbering of individual cars in a particular series can vary in this way: Series numbers for EMUs (not shinkansen!) are always (lately) odd—e.g., 115, E231, 485. Within that series, individual cars models may take either that value or one less to indicate variations. So, e.g., in JR East's E231, you find MOHA-E231 (w/pantograph) and MOHA-E230 (w/out pantograph). So it is with the 115-series: There is a MOHA-114 (w/pantograph) and MOHA-115 (w/out pantograph). (e.g.: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10009488 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10003855 So, it should fit. Might take some fiddling if they've redesigned the model between the one you own and the one that frame goes to, but I can't imagine it would be much. The under-car details shouldn't vary between these two, or if so only slightly. You might even be able to reuse the under-car details from your old model. Link to comment
scott
Yeah, the 114-1000 "with mortor" :) looks pretty close. But I never would have figured out that numbering system. Looks like we've found a solution....thanks, guys! Link to comment
scott
I ordered the replacement Tomix chassis from Bill's list, and not long afterwards we got a call from the credit card alerting us to suspicious activity on our credit card in Japan. :) Link to comment
scott
OK--looks like I've started my membership in the EMS Tracking Club. :) The chassis is on the way.... Link to comment
Bernard
Scott - Did you chassis arrive yet? Link to comment
scott
Yup--it arrived, and was a good fit. The 115 is now back to running very smoothly! I'll have to get some more pictures soon. (BTW--I would have responded sooner, but while we were in Tucson, I couldn't get into the forum through the hotel's wireless.) Link to comment
