I just happened upon this information, Union Pacific will be restoring locomotive #4014, a 4-8-8-4 that's been on static display in Pomona since the early '60s.  I wonder if JR East's restoration activities are known at UP.  Apparently this has been fairly well cared for, including greasing of various bearings throughout the drive system.

That's interesting.. They've often claimed restoring one wouldn't make sense because there are very few turntable still in operation that could actually handle them. Would definitely be worth a trip to the US to see this beast in action though :)

Turntables are few and far between in the U.S. these days anyway and it doesn't seem to be a problem with the Challenger which is almost as long.

It will certainly be worth a trip to the U.S. when the restoration is complete although there will probably be several thousand others to get in the way of your photos and the Wyoming Highway Patrol will have a field day with the motorcaders.

The first video is the final move of the locomotive out of the parking lot where it had been on static display since January 1962.  The second and third videos are progress updates from UP in March 2016.
