I was looking through some kato stuff at a online website and saw this kato oil thing. It's like in a bottle. I think it is used to put oil on the train wheels but im not sure... is it necessary?

Klaus,

im guessing it was some gear oil/grease. trains with time (and many times out of the box) will need some lubing. you can purchase a few different kinds of light to thicker oils to do this on the trains. very light oil for on the motor bearings (requires tearing the chassis apart) and the thicker oil/grease on the truck gears (you can usually do this right to the gears under the truck.

you only need tiny amounts. best to actually use a tooth pick or micro brush applicator to apply little bits at a time and then run for a bit and repeat if necessary. all the needle applicators can be tricky to get a very small amount, easy for a small drop to go then you get a mess. this just gets it too thick with oil which then picks up shmutz from around your layout and will eventually gum up gears if bad. plus the extra oil tends to get sprayed on to the track and then that pick ups smutz and you end up with dirty track and wheels!

there are a few threads here on lubing trains.
