JR West Special Cruise Train

This looks something like Twilight Express rolling stock but used on a special cruise train on the Kure line.

Machine translated photographer's notes:

"The organization extraordinary column of Naniwa salon car that is operated in accordance with the Hiroshima Destination Campaign is a car. It has been operated as a cruise train → Okayama Hiroshima (via Kure Line). EF65 1128 Unit tow was (Shimonoseki General Rolling plants belong). "

The 'Salon Car Naniwa' (a Joyful Train) has been in service since 1983 and has nothing to do with the Twilight Express (An overnight luxury train, 1989). The 'Salon Car Naniwa' is owned by JR West (started by JNR), whereas the Twilight Express is operated by the JR Group after the privatisation of JNR.

Albeit the colours having some resemblance, the livery is different and they serve a different purpose. The only similarity is that they are both locomotive hauled trains.

Good find, Bill.  I've seen this one as well as the Yuu Yuu Salon, which was based at Okayama.  Here's an interesting video by commet03, made when they retired it (March 2011, I didn't know about this):

First are some stills, they look like they could be from the JNR era, then some run-bys, and finally, movement at or around Yonago, on its way to Gotoh Depot to be chopped up.  Too bad.  Maybe the rolling stock available for these trains will be replenished to some degree when the Twilight Express is retired.

Also, the English wikipedia page on joyful trains looks quite substantial:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joyful_Train

I wonder does this train run the full distance of the Kure Line from Mihara all the way to just east of Hiroshima....

That's what the information given said, why wouldn't it?

Give JR West your money and they can work the magic.

Is this enough magic for you? ;)

Oh and maybe add the Twilight Express on a special run as well? :D

Sorry for the bump, but on this shortened formation, what is the typical coaching stock used?  Looks like a nice one to recreate for smaller layouts, so the knowledge would be most useful to me.  :)

Yeah, I saw that on the news a few days ago.  Pretty much mirrors the transformation of overnight trains for the ordinary person to a conveyance for the rich and retired.

Lol! All I could think of was a necromonger helmet!

But bad to get those images in your head like the atomic wedgie joyful E3...

Yeah... on some new designs we've seen in the past few years, I've said I'll reserve comment until I see the real thing (versus the artist's rendering).  Fact is the artist's renderings are pretty darn accurate, so if this thing looks significantly different in the flesh (or rather, steel), I'll be surprised.  Honestly I'm more interested in the routes they'll run with this.  Strictly speaking about the rolling stock itself, I think JRE's cruise train that'll be able to shut off its diesel when under wire, is more interesting.
