bnicolas1987
Hi, here are the pictures from the new EF 510-501 in Hokutosei livery, arrivd yersterday mornig. The model looks fine, it is heavy, well painted, the olnly negstive point for me is that the add on parts are non available and without them the model is not very complete. Here are some pictures: The DCC in the description, can someone translate this? te rest of the description, did someone can tell me if they are speaking about DCC? And here is the album, wich will be completed with the DCC fitting when I wil make it. 2 Link to comment
keitaro
hi Nicholas, i don`t know too much but it`s about heat and lights and using a controller. i think it`s just a generic warning about the use of lights for prolonged time with the controller always on Link to comment
bnicolas1987
Hi, for the translation I have one done in french by the japanese wife of a member on another forum. It is that this locomotive shouldn't be use with the 00 mode of the DCC controler (this 00 mode allow to run a non DCC locomotive on a DCC layout) In second, we shouldn't block the locomotive with voltage on tracks to not fire the motor. Thank you. See You. Nicolas Edited November 3, 2013 by bnicolas1987 Link to comment
keitaro
hmm but i`m sure it says lights. i guess maybe the00 dc mode might burn them out. Link to comment
bnicolas1987
Hi, Here are some pictures of the HO model of the EF 510-500 from Tomix (prestige model, with all add on parts on the model) End of pictures in next message 2 Link to comment
bnicolas1987
So, here are the last pictures. This locomotive will be more easy to fit in DCC. It is also more detailed than the Kato, baut more than twice the price. See you. Nicolas 1 Link to comment
fenice19
hi about tomix EF. I don't understand the difference between prestige and non prestige models examples tomix HO 141 and HO 190 models prestige same color. I'm searching the one with cassiopeia color Edited January 3, 2014 by fenice19 Link to comment
bnicolas1987
Hi, Locomotives from the prestige series have the add on parts already fitted on the locomotive, instead, tomix stadard locomotives have to be fitted by the owner. It seems like some add ons parts are in metal instead of plastic for the normal serie. But, for this locomotive, the prestige serie was the only one available, so as the Kato is too difficult to be fitted in DCC; I choose a Tomix model. See you. Nicolas Link to comment
Darklighter
as the Kato is too difficult to be fitted in DCC What exactly is the problem? Link to comment
bnicolas1987
The PCB isn't very easy to understand and I don't like SMD component, it's too hard to wire them. Link to comment
fenice19
just bought HO 190 ( EF 500) from Tomix to complete my cassiopeia train. I've found internal decals and sheets for all 12 cars as described in my previous post. next week i'll post some pictures of my first modified car Edited January 4, 2014 by fenice19 Link to comment

DBSchenker60008
I always thought that Kato used 21 pin DCC decoder boards to allow easy installation? Link to comment
VJM
Not in either of the Kato HO EF510, DD51, or DE10 that I have. There's an 8-pin socket in the DD51 and DE10, but the EF510, with truck motors, has no socket at all. Link to comment
DBSchenker60008
That's bizarre as I know a few modellers that use DCC that do not like soldering for the fear of messing things up completely. Although I have no problems in hardwiring a decoder into the model myself. I shall get some 21-pin harnesses to retrofit into the model as I am looking into adding a LokSound decoder into my example when I buy it after completing my E5 Shinkansen :). Cheers Ash. Darklighter
I just noticed that the new Kato GE P42 "Genesis" uses the same truck-motor drive. This model isn't DCC-friendly either but the DCC installation guide provided by Kato USA might be useful for converting an EF510, too: http://www.katousa.com/HO/P42/maint/DCC-install.html (However, the circuit board is not the same!) DBSchenker60008
Thanks Darklighter, That helps a lot. I have a soldering kit along with a razor saw to sever the terminals for the DCC modification although it looks like I shall need to invest in a mill drill to drill out some of the metal chassis :). Another option is the throw away the PCB and directly solder the harness to the two motors and lights etc ;). I will use a Lenz Gold as these German decoders can handle a heavier current load than the Bachmann and the flimsy Hornby ones (I've popped a few in my time) as the latter two makes are not as robust. I am surprised to see that Kato hasn't made these two locomotives DCC ready by default as DCC is quite popular here in the UK and Europe as well as the US. Maybe DCC isn't as popular in Japan as I originally thought? Link to comment
bnicolas1987
Hi, I managed to fit the EF 510 in DCC, the harder was to make space in the body..... Here are two pictures (sorry, I forget to done pictures from body and under PCB) I can manage to make more pictures if someone is interrested, but if it's not necessary to move the PCB is't better for me ;-) ... See you! Nicolas 1 Link to comment
DBSchenker60008
Thanks for the photos of the DCC set up :). Its much appreciated! Link to comment
bnicolas1987
Hi, Here are more pictures on how to fit the EF 510 from tomix in DCC: It is quite hard to find free space in the locomotive, but i managed to make some space for the decoder. See you. Nicolas Link to comment
upwpfan
Folks; I found it very strange that Kato did not make DCC installs in there locomotives with the new drive easier. For years they produced US prototype engines in HO scale that were fairly easy to add DCC to....more recently it seems that Kato is abandoning the US HO scale prototype market entirely. The pressure from Athearn, Intermountain, Atlas, and Walthers et al...must be forcing them out of the HO market. I am sorry they have taken this course of action. I wish they were back. bnicolas1987
Don't forget that this locomotive is the Tomix, not the Kato, the Kato ave more space for the decoder inside, but it is harder to fit as the LED and all component are SMD. Link to comment
bnicolas1987
Hi, Today I've finished the EF 510 in Cassiopeia livery, I profited to do some pics with the EF 510 in Hokutosei livery. And each one with one car of their train: I'll try to run the two complete trains next sunday at the exibition of my club. Cheers. Nicolas 11 Link to comment
