160 km/h (100 mph) was not a mean feat for a train running on 3' 6" (1067 mm) gauge tracks. The 151 Series EMU allowed JNR to run the Kodama limited express train from Tokyo to Osaka in under 7 hours--a major feat for its day given the considerable curvature of the Tokaidō Main Line (東海道本線) between Tokyo and Osaka.
