scott
[not sure if this goes in N Gauge or Prototypes....] I recently found a used "World Electric Locomotives" book at a local bookstore--it's a bit out of date, but there's lot of good stuff in it. One thing I found out by reading it was that the Kato ED75-700 I have is based on a sub-type designed for passenger use, not just freight (as well as for cold-weather conditions). So now I'm wondering what coaches would be right with it. The few pictures I've seen so far show either blue coaches, or matching red ones, but I'm not sure what they're called or how to search for them. Any advice would be appreciated.... Link to comment
CaptOblivious
I think this goes in Prototypes, I'll put it there. The red train is most likely the "Orient Saloon", pulled by a pair of custom-painted ED75-700's link: http://www.trainwww.com/ed75/feature-stories/orient/1987.htm http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/オリエントサルーン The blue coaches are from one of the famous Sleeper Express "Blue Trains". The Tohoku main line is DC electrified along the southern half (Tokyo to Kuroiso) and AC along the northern half (Kuroiso to Aomori). Blue trains departing Ueno would be headed by an EF65 DC loco; at the Kuroiso Dead Zone, the train would be handed off to one or two ED75 units, up to Aomori. If the train was destined to somewhere in Hokkaido, then a pair of ED79 units would take the train through the Seikan Tunnel. So ED75's could be seen pulling Blue Trains in the past (these days, the Cassiopeia and the Hokutosei are hauled by dual-voltage EF81s). One of the Blue Trains it pulled was the "ゆうづる" ("Yuudzuru" or "Yuudsuru" or even just "Yudusuru"), which was made by Micro Ace: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10059083 https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10059084 (The base set is sold out at Hobby Search, but Rainbow Ten has it! http://www.rainbowten.co.jp/data/etrain.htm) The ED75-700 is also salt-proofed for use on the Joban and Uetsu lines. There's also an extensive website devoted to the ED75 (in Japanese :( ) http://www.trainwww.com/ed75/index.html which has a page on the Blue Trains the ED75 has pulled in the past http://www.trainwww.com/ed75/feature-stories/ltdexp/index.htm Well, it's a start, right? scott
Well, it's a start, right? Dang, that's more than a start, that's an encyclopedia. Thanks! I'm also seeing some red coaches that aren't the "Orient Saloon," such as: http://www.trainwww.com/ed75/d-archive/0701-0737/m/07089403.jpg Any idea what those are? Link to comment
scott
BTW--does EF = DC and ED = AC? Link to comment
CaptOblivious
BTW--does EF = DC and ED = AC? Good guess, but no… EF65 E = electric F = B0B0B0 axle configuration (three powered trucks with two axles each) 6 = DC 5 = model no. ED75 E = electric D = B0B0 axle configuration (two powered trucks with two axles each) 7 = AC 5 = model no. Scott, they are Series 50 coaches, type Oha50 and Ohafu50. Tomix make them in N scale, and also HO. I haven't seen the N scale models, but I have some HO examples, and they are superb in every way. Funny you should mention ED75s, they are my favourite JR electric loco, I'm about to buy one of the Tomix HO models to haul my five-car train of Series 50 cars. There's a number of published sources that show train consists of these cars being hauled by ED75s, so you can't go wrong if you get some to go with your model ED75. All the best, Mark.
