Yes this site is great for comparison, i bookmarked it sometime ago, when i chanced upon it when a forum member shared this:

Great site to compare the models! But only limited to shinkansens and some external companies trains... Wished there were more trains... 

 

 

Did KATO ever do a Shinkensen 300?   I have seen Tomix and MA add-on sets, but never a KATO...

Nope i don't believe so... Tomix did the 300, 400 and 700-7000 Railstar series, and Kato never did. In fact, i believe the 700-7000 Railstar was only ever done in model by Tomix. However, it would seem Kato is also the first to come out with newer models, like with the E5 and E6. MicroAce did some special runs like the A8470 E926 East-i inspection shinkansen, Series 922-10 Series ) type inspection shinkansen and the Series Kiya E193 Diesel inspection train.

I guess you can mark me as 'surprised by that', JR500....i know KATO did the 0,100, 200 and then jumped to the 500.....i know the 400 and the E-3 looked a lot alike (prolly why they skipped that one), but the 300 was a rather unique design in bullet trains compared to the others with it's plow-like nose compared to the bullet and airplane noses of the other Shinkansens,...

Yap.. The 400 is almost identical to the E3 Tsubasa, just the difference of the front lights and some side painting. There was an older painting without the green stripe, and the newer one that has the stripe and look ALMOST the same as the E3 Tsuabsa, minus the front lights and the wing emblem of Tsubasa...

 

I agree, the 300 is unique in its own way... unfortunately i had to let go the model as it really doesn't go well with the newer 700s and N700s.

 

The comparisons between each maker is really hard to decide...

actually there is quite a bit of difference in the 400 and E3 design. very different nose, cockpit window, cross section, skirts, etc.

 

while they look a bit similar up close they are pretty different, especially when you put them side by side.

Thank you for the link, I've had Speedsphere bookmarked for a while, but it's great to see it featured here!

It really is a great recourse for the Shinkansen modeler/collector and/or anyone interested in model Shinkansen.

Unfortunatly not, I wouldn't mind seeing another 300系 model, seeing as the Tomix model (with exception of the Sayōnara set) is getting long in the tooth, and the MicroAce set is pretty expensive (not to mention rather hard to come by). And I wouldn't mind seeing a Kato version, with 1990's prototype details (cross arm pantographs, the original pantograph covers etc) please, though I think this is unlikely...

I believe Kato did them in the following order: 200系, 0系 (both early/mid 80's) E1系, 100系, 500系 (mid/late 1990's), though some of our members are probably more knowledgable on this subject, and might be able to correct me on this. :)

Like Jeff said, they are of a totaly different design, they only shared the same colorscheme on Tsubasa services, and this scheme was actually introduced on the E3系1000番台, before being applied to the 400系 fleet during their 1999~2001 inspection cycle.

In terms of technology they are miles apart as well, as the 400系 uses a Phase Controll Thyristor propulsion package (using DC traction) similar to the one used on the 100系, while the E3系 uses a VVVF (variable voltage variable frequency) package (GTO-VVVF on the E3系0番台 and IBGT-VVVF on the E3系1000/2000番台) using AC traction.

The E3系 prototype, formation S8 (build in 1995), later formation R1, did have some 400系 features though.

Like for example the narrow nose and cab mounted lights, this was changed with the first production formation, formation R2, to the now familliar E3系 look.

R1 was unfortunatly retired, whith a little ceremony, on the 20th of July this year, and was scrapped this month.

didn't know that there were much difference in the E3 and the 400... They truely look identical to the novice like me ~~

I do not know why Kato did not release the 300系, except to say that I remember the "shovel nose" was not popular when it was released.  Many railfan suggested that it was not attractive.  You will find there was a frantic attempt by Tomix and Micro Ace to release product over the last two years before 300系 was retired altogether

 

However, there remains plenty of choice for the collector:

Thanks for that info and the piccy,  200系  *bows to your superior knowledge*...i do happen to have a Tomix 400 and a Kato E3 and seeing the cabs side-by-side, i can now tell they are two entirely different animals altogether....

 

Still wish there was a remotely affordable 300 out there....simply because it IS so different from the other Shikansens...

So there is actually only one model released with a prototypical 16-car configuration?

 

So sorry Mr Densha,

 

All six sets are 16-car.  I had only listed the basic set in each case.  I have now amended the post to show full detail, including feature of panto, which is important for the collector who wish to represent an original formation.
