macdon
Having known my son would abandon our first roundy-round project in favor of the shinkansen V13 oval, I thought I'd go back to it and see what other projects I could do to it. Since I have some surplus of curve tracks and viaducts, I went ahead to create a simple layout for the Fujimi Byodo-in temple which serves as the focal point. It is still under construction, but here's some pics........ Mardon Edited September 16, 2013 by macdon 2 Link to comment

macdon
Byodo-In project construction photos...... This project was actually a test bed of sorts as its been 35yrs ago since I had any sort of layout with my first HO train set. I didnt have land forms back then and my scenery was just composed of lichen glued to wire to represent trees. Crudely painted roadways directly on plywood and some plastic building kits along with the tracks was basically the composition of my 4'x8' HO layout back then. Unfortunately, the polystyrene foam used typically for model railroading is something of a rarity here in Manila. So I settled with the more common and abundant white beaded styrofoam that you can easily acquire in any craft store. Byodo-In has a large pond and my material for replicating water is clear cast resin, however resin products will eat/melt the styrofoam - thus I had to buy "styro-skin". Styro-skin is a 2 part mixture of powder and liquid which you brush on the beaded styrofoam so it could take any resin base product. Its a 3 powder to 1 liquid mix that somehow looks like plaster when mixed with water and you get a consistency of something like Elmers Glue. While I do only have to brush on the edges of the pond where the resin and styrofoam will meet, I decided to just brush the whole project with it. Once dry, the whole area was painted with brown (ground/soil) latex paint and while the paint was still wet - elmers glue was brushed on before sprinkling the woodland scenics ground turf materials. While this was my first experience to try all of these products out as well as make a proper layout, it turned out to be a pleasant experience and did gave me courage to tackle my main 3'x7' layout.
