westfalen
This is what I have come up with so far for our trip in Nov/Dec this year with a bit of mileage collecting and a bit of freight watching. miyakoji
westfalen, this looks great. I checked it against ekikara.jp, all times ultimately work out, but I noticed a few things - the Tarumi -> Ogaki run is actually train number 28 - I can't find 1458D. It seems like 356D connects directly with 1462D - Shinji to Izumo-shi at the time you list is local 143D, the Yakumo 1017M is at 18:01 Another thing to watch out for is connections on the Monday through Hiroshima/Shimane, the services are so infrequent that an error could cause a lot of problems for you. Fortunately, perhaps, there's nothing to do outside of those stations anyway, so there shouldn't be any distractions . Looks like a great ride though, I wish I'd have done that. Link to comment
Mudkip Orange
Nice frickin' routing. Be sure to video the switchbacks at Izumo-sakane! Link to comment

The errors you pointed out have been corrected. A combination of being your own proof reader and using a combination of Hyperdia and last December's timetable. I had a hunch the Bingo Ochiai to Shinji train was a through service, it is shown as two separate trains in last year's timetable. Link to comment
westfalen
Nice frickin' routing. Be sure to video the switchbacks at Izumo-sakane! I've been over it a couple of times southbound but this will be my first time going north. Link to comment

bikkuri bahn
Westy, if you're not too tired, that evening in Ogaki can be spent with a nice round trip on the Tokaido Line between Ogaki and Maibara- the sunsets past Sekigahara tend to be rather pretty, if the weather permits. 1 Link to comment

Will keep that in mind depending on the weather and time of sunset that time of year, maybe have dinner in Maibara. Link to comment
Sacto1985
There's a possibility you might run into YouTube user nimo5 and not know it on December 2-3, 2013. I believe nimo5 lives in the town of Izumo. Link to comment

westfalen
Spent the night in Ogaki, getting there via the Kansai Line and Yoro Railway. We were on the station until midnight videoing freight trains so will post photos when I get a bit more time. We are heading for Kiyosu today to spend the day videoing more freight before we continue to Hiroshima. 1 Link to comment
westfalen
Spent the day on the platform at Kiyosu with a few Japanese railfans, it seems to be a popular spot, lost track of how many freight trains we saw. Caught Shinkansen to Hiroshima, will be spending three nights here. Some photos from the last couple of days. 4 Link to comment

westfalen
I like that there are still many old freight locomotives running there! One of the Japanese guys at Kiyosu said there were seven EF66 0 series still in service and we think we have seen five so far, but Kiyosu and Ogaki seem good places for freight watching. JR 500系
Thanks West for the photos! It's great to see the 201 still in service. I believe the orange train with the Kabuki painting is featured in the coming railway collection 19? Best picture i liked was the two 500 series side by side... Nice! Can i know the station it was captured? Link to comment
Densha
It's great to see the 201 still in service. Not to forget the 103's! Best picture i liked was the two 500 series side by side... Did you notice the 500 on the left is the one with the 'transformer'-500 on the side of the cab? Link to comment

To get what might be a last ride on them, tonight we caught 758 to Higashi Hiroshima and Kodama 760 went through while we were there with another 500, then we returned to Hiroshima on Kodama 757 which was also a 500. westfalen
Yesterday we caught the train to Otake and watched a DE10 shunting container wagons, then we traveled via the Nishikigawa Railway to Shin-Iwakuna and caught a Shinkansen back to Hiroshima. In the afternoon we went to Muckainada to watch freight trains. After dinner was a trip to Higashi Hiroshima and back by 500 series. We plan to spend today just riding trams and sightseeing. A few of the days photos. 2 Link to comment

Argh, I should have done the same. Didn't see any 500 on my trip. BTW, I'm also a fan of cute female conductors. :icon_biggrin: Link to comment

Densha
JR West really still has all the cool JNR rolling stock in service! I've never seen that purple JRF livery on that DE10 before. I like that picture where you're putting your hand on the 500 as if it's yours. ;) 1 Link to comment
westfalen
I saw a DE10 in those colours in Kyushu in 2011, I don't know if it was the same one. Some photos of yesterdays tram riding. 3 Link to comment
