Hello yakumo381,

There is a Japan Wiki page about this topic: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%9B%BD%E9%89%84%E8%89%B2

You can use a translator such as Google Translate to change to English.

Here is the link for current JR and Private Railway color schemes: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E3%81%AE%E9%89%84%E9%81%93%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AB%E3%83%A9%E3%83%BC%E4%B8%80%E8%A6%A7

Probably two best-known JNR color schemes were the cream and red scheme used on all express trains in the late 1950's (the KiHa 80 DMU trainset that introduced express services to many parts of Japan was painted in this scheme) and seen primarily on the Yakumo train between Okayama and Izumoshi and the Shōnan color scheme used on trains between Tokyo and Numazu Stations (a reminder of that scheme is still around with the E233-3000's with bi-level Green Car coaches that travel from Tokyo to Atama/Numazu today--you can easily see the Shōnan colors on the train).

There is also a page in japan wiki for JR line colours (as above is JNR).
