Family of 91-year-old dementia sufferer struck by train ordered to pay JR compensation

Recommended Posts

That's quite... horrible... The family now has to deal with the lost of a loved one and the compensation amount, which probably isn't little...

I like the website though... Lotsa interesting news there, esp this one!  http://en.rocketnews24.com/2013/06/06/the-tecchan-house-where-your-train-collection-can-lower-your-rent/

Now that IS interesting! Those with 16 car shinkansens now is the time to flaunt your collection for a good 'cost'!

The comments are really quite wrong. Most people are saying "Wow JR has no right to do this" "They don't care if they take money off the family" when that is just factually wrong.

From what I read there, the judge is making them pay compensation, it doesn't seem JR was out to seek it at all.

Yes i believe such compensation measures have to be taken to discourage people from committing suicide by jumping in front of a moving train, and at the same time, cause huge disturbances to the usually hectic commuters running about their hectic lifestyles. Committing suicide is bad, and made even worse when others suffer together with the loved ones of the person who committed suicide. If no measures were there, there would be even more of these incidents and that would definately affect the lifestyles esp those that use the train to and back from work, which in Japan is a major issue.

People should seriously consider really carefully before committing suicide. I believe anything can be solved with discussions with loved ones and facing the problem together, instead of running away from the problem which only hurts the loved ones left behind so suddenly...

If you have ever known anyone at the brink of suicide you would know what you are asking is just not plausible, when folks are at that point they are not thinking rationally any more and the pain they are in can be blinding. I know I have dealt with some very close that were at this point and have lost a couple of good friends this way. You ask for something they can't do. It's easy to say you should face your problems and think of others when you are in a normal state totally different when things get to that point.
