Nick_Burman
Hi all, Watching an Iyotetsu film, a couple of questions sprung up... - Is the Railway division still 600V? Or have they told Keio to rewire the ex-Inokashira trainsets they bought to 600V? - Parts of Iyotetsu's railway and tramway divisions were Japan's first 762mm gauge railway lines. When later squeezed by an (1435mm) competitor, Iyotetsu regauged to 1067mm and electrified. However JNR only showed up its face in Matsuyama in the 1920's...when it arrived, did Iyotetstu ever run a track connection to JNR, or didn't they bother with it? Photos taken in the 1960's show electric equipment fitted with AAR couplers, but the steam cars (used on one branch behind diesels) still had their central buffer-coupler dating from 762mm gauge days (and so did the diesels). Based on this, one could surmise that they didn't have any interchange traffic, correct? Cheers NB Link to comment

The railway section is in general 750V, except for the Takahama line, which is 600V, since it intersects with the Matsuyama tram lines. Rolling stock is able to switch between 750V and 600V. I don't know about the history of the tram/railway company though... Link to comment
marknewton
G'day Nick! "Electric Railways Of Japan" Volume 3 makes no mention of Iyotetsu having any interchange with JNR. Cheers, Mark. Link to comment

Nick_Burman
Iyotetsu ceased freight service in 1956. Thanks BB, for once I wasn't thinking about freight just wondering if they established a gauge-compatible connection once JGR showed up. But since you mentioned it, was this freight service in interchange with JGR/JNR or was it intraline, between the port, Matsuyama and hinterland points? 1956 is very early to ditch freight services. Nick_Burman
G'day Nick! "Electric Railways Of Japan" Volume 3 makes no mention of Iyotetsu having any interchange with JNR. Cheers, Mark. The 3 books are very good, but they tend to skip minor details in favour of big ones. Making a working connection (that is, not necessarily one used for regular interchange) would be one which could have been glossed over in exchange for putting in other details in the text.
