Not sure this has been posted before, but I just came across this little nugget when trying to look for which colours were used on older JNR locomotives: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/国鉄色

Now I just need to find a way to convert RGB, hex or Munsell colour codes to which Gunze Sangyo paints to mix to get the colour =)

I had done an english translation of that page for our wiki, back when it existed. It is quite nice! Greenmax makes a range of colors that match them, but you can't export them boo. I hear that Vallejo will do custom color mixes in large batches—I wonder if there are enough of us here outside of Japan who would want them to make that a viable option? I doubt it…

I wonder which paint World Kougei uses.. They have pre-build/pre-painted versions of their kits for sale, so they should also have the correct colours. Might be they use those GreenMax ones, but I do seem to remember them mentioning Gunze paints on their old site (they refreshed their site somewhat recently)

You don't have any backups of that do you?  We had made some progress on a Japanese-English railway terminology page.

Hi Martijn,

Thank you for posting, was just wondering about this with regard the early "Grape" which I see had both early and late grapes.

Not sure whether this might help? - An online tool for matching paint colours to some commercial brands (though not Gunze) and between those brands. It also can apparently pick a colour off a picture and match it though I hanve'nt managed to get that bit to work successfully.

I can't comment on accuracy but it at least gives an idea of some potential colour matches.

Cheers, Andrew

It seems early grape (grape 1) is pre-WW II, while late grape (grape 2) is post-WW II.

That site should help, there are plenty conversion charts from tamiya/revell/humbrol etc to Gunze, and I don't HAVE to use Gunze, but they're great paints for airbrushing and it sticks well :)
