Sorting cement tanks on the Sangi Railway. In the process the crew shows that the hand brakes on their tank cars do work very well indeed. T¨hey also take the chance to sort out bad-ordered cars or cars which need cleaning. Worth watching just for the hearty growl put out by the electrics.

Perfectly orchistrated.

Two things I can sit and watch as the time goes by: fishermen unloading their catch, and sorting the freight in the yard.

Fly shunting, illegal on the UK railway thanks to Mr Health & Safety

There are hump yards in the US, is this done?  Seems like the kind of thing that would encourage cowboy behavior, leading to injuries and death.

With modern hump yards, there are mechanical retarders which slow down the individual freight cars so no personnel are required to be riding on the cars.

There used to be some of these on the JNR system, before car load freight was phased out (at Omiya, starting around 2:00)

*sorry, for some reason the video won't embed

Hump yards in the UK closed in the 80's when 'wagonload' freight ended and BR switched to block trains which didnt need sorting and would just stay in one fixed formation from start to finish. Hump shunting also would be illegal on todays UK railway even with mechanical retarders!

Hello Mr bikkuri bahn,

Thank you for posting latest video.  I very enjoyed it.  Three things were quite interesting: the 200 series at opening of video, the 3-way turn out at 3:30 and, of course, the mixed freight consist at 5:30 give me good idea of prototypical consist.

Another try:

Very interesting. The middle yard tower op (the one in shirt sleeves) reminds me of a friend (of Japanese descent)...
