lighthouse
In the former GDR there were also ugly types of trains. Fortunately, there were mostly only test vehicles. The series 280 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR was one of them. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/DR-Baureihe_280 http://www.tt-kroli.de/BR_280_Fotogalerie_Indienststellung.html Edited October 25, 2018 by lighthouse Link to comment

And though I wouldn’t necessarily call it ugly, the E351 looks like an Easter egg from the front. I wonder what they could have done had they had a fast enough line to try it out properly on. And poor tall boi. :P Link to comment

It reminds me of our ALe 582 in the old grey/red/orange color scheme (especially the doors and the overall disposition). I think they would've been pretty nice trains, if they did not have all that issues. 2 Link to comment

And this was an early example of a streamlined steam loco, so there wasn’t much around in the way of a precedent or inspiration. Mark. 1 Link to comment
ConnieCommie
I personally take the viewpoint that Function>>>Form, so stuff like the Blue Tiger and that vactrain isn't offensive as it works. (Photo taken by me) Stuff like the 332 Class and the Networkers however looks very bad because it dates itself to the late 90s and just looks worn out in the same way that early 200s ford mustangs do. 1 Link to comment

Kiha66
That unit came about as the Rock island railroad had some trains which split to two destinations similar to some JNR trains. They wanted B units that could handle pulling a few cars on their own for these duties while blending in to the full train behind a proper cab unit. I had no idea some survived to be assigned to commute duties, the much less attractive late paint scheme doesnt do them any favors. Looks like something you'd find in Australia! 1 1 Link to comment
Khaul
Hmmm, the worst Australian I have seen (in pictures) are the Tulloch trailers, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_rolling_stock_in_New_South_Wales#/media/File:CityRail-Tulloch-trailer-T4873.jpg The old double decker EMUs, almost all retired, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_rolling_stock_in_New_South_Wales#/media/File:CityRailS.jpg, are not pretty, but at least they don't have those tiny 1960s bus windows. The "limited express" V sets are actually quite nice. The modern Sydney double deckers are just boring. Endeavours are boring and have nasty interiors. The CPH railmotors are cool https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_rolling_stock_in_New_South_Wales#/media/File:CPH_12_railmotor_at_Wagga_Wagga_Railway_Station.JPG Link to comment
ben_issacs
Folks, I can't find a shot, but Melbourne's Siemens EMU subbies are pretty awful! They are slab-sided, and the motors have plastic fronts that don't match the outline of the rest of the car body. It seems that they picked the bodies off one shelf and the fronts off another and stuck them together. Their only good feature is that they have excellent acceleration! Get away like a scalded cat! Regards, Bill, Melboourne. Link to comment

Actually they did, the units are part of Siemen's "Modular Metro" series, which greatly reduces the cost of designing new stock at the expense of styling. Not that Siemen's styling department has very much merit.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siemens_Modular_Metro 1 Link to comment

ben_issacs
Folks, The shot of the Melbourne Metro Siemens stock doesn't show the way that the stuck on front doesn't match the rest of the carriage roof line. One needs a dso shot of the front to show this. Bill, Melbourne. Link to comment

Agreed, agreed (as per ) It's quite enjoyable to look back at old posts on this thread and be reminded of the design disasters identified. I'd prefer to ride upstairs, but the tiny windows gave me a claustrophobic feeling. Agreed on the V sets. I always think they look classy when they race through stations. Link to comment

marknewton
Aesthetics aside, the Tulloch cars rode well and had comfortable seats. As for V set interurbans, only passengers like them. Anyone who has to work the things has a different view of them. Give me an OSCAR any day. Cheers, Mark. Link to comment
