Good examples are the 113/115 series from 1963. They were the better designed suburban successors of the 101/103 series from 1957. (the 10x series had better components but mostly kept the old shape, while the 11x series got a redesign into the imho most classic and recognizable japanese multiple unit design) Up until the end of the JNR, you could see several standard characteristics that were used for trains and it was an evoluionary process with new ideas added to each line of commuter, suburban and express train line. The classic designs were the flat front commuters (3 main styles), the near shaped suburbans (both diesel and electric) and the aerodynamic expresses (the split windscreen early desins and the various high cabs). JR companies have continued this trend somewhat, with JR Central following the classic JNR styles most directly. 1 Link to comment

Socimi
New colors for italy's intercity trains: German Ones! Because after copying the french (and the swiss as well) for regional trains, what's left? Anyway. The official name is "Intercity Sun". Fitting, for a livery based on white and grey. I rather like the new Trenitalia long-distance colours. The XMPR scheme used on the present-day stock is ugly, over-complicated for ordinary railway use and does not weather well (especially when the vinyl starts to peel, fade or fall off). It gave Trenitalia IC trains a very dishevelled look. I hope the new scheme weathers better in use. As for the scheme being identical to the DB one, it could be worse... when the EUROFIMA coaches were first delivered in the 1970's the idea was that all of them should have worn the same (hideous!) orange and white scheme independently of which administration they were delivered to (the idea was to create a pan-European passenger rolling stock pool that could be moved around according to necessity). Even FS jumped in the bandwagon...until sanity prevailed and coaches were delivered in the colours of the various individual administrations. Cheers NB Link to comment

Because switching them off wasn't enough. Those almost look ghostly... not sure I’d want to be in an empty station alone with one of these. Back to Japan: my contribution would be the JNR streamlined C53: http://locomotive.wikia.com/wiki/File:JNR_C5343_Engine.jpg Though the design is terrible for a steam loco, I can’t help but notice its resemblance to the 700 series Shinkansen. And though I wouldn’t necessarily call it ugly, the E351 looks like an Easter egg from the front. Link to comment
