I know I'm asking too much...but would it be possible to ID the factory being switched in the pics? Also, any clues about what might have gone in or out of it?

Well, it is (was) Gobuichi Station.  According to the Japanese wiki page, the factory nearby was the Rengo Company's Fukui factory.  They make packaging.  Not sure what the material would be.

So, in ink, maybe coatings and paper.  Out? cartons or more than likely, bags for rice and containers for vedgetables.  More than likely finished product goes out to whatever the equivelent of the farm coop is by truck.

WOW, THAT WAS QUICK! :blink: (this forum's knowledge base is astonishing...)

 

I trawled through their pages, the Takefu plant (Gobuichi is a part of Takefu Town) specializes in cellophane manufacturing. This justifies the tank cars - chemicals and cellulose (in boxcars) in, finished product out. A bit too specialized for the Tomiiden, I'm afraid, but I think a cardboard factory is in order for a future expansion...
