I think the author is doing a good job of covering all of the aspects a beginner might find confusing, at least enough to get started. It feels a bit superficial in places, but then those tend to be the areas, like composition, where you could write whole volumes on the subject, so I suppose that's inescapable. The one thing he glossed over, perhaps because he uses a small-sensor camera, is that larger sensors have less depth of field for the same focal length. This makes a good "small" camera better for layout photography than a sophisticated SLR in some ways (within bounds, and I've certainly managed well with an SLR, but shallow depth of field has always been an issue for me).
