Spaceman Spiff
Quick update. Switch panels are finally done. Got rid of the old Kato switch controllers and added fascia board. Finally got rid of the construction look. For all intents and purposes pretty well done with the major work. Need to straighten up some trees and add a few hundred more. Then need to clean up, add curtains, lighting and detailing to go. Pics of the old panel and the new set up. kvp
Now the whole layout looks very good and finished. Also you have more space after that big switch desk is gone. Link to comment
cteno4
Spiff, Cleaning up really nicely! It is amazing how the trim bits can really change the appearance and focus the eye onto the layout better! Cheers Jeff Link to comment

Kb4iuj
Nice looking layout. Did you use Kato track 100% or Tomix... I must say I'm still a fan of flex track. I see your running a CN coal train... Have you got started building a IO train. (io = Intermodal). Edited October 10, 2015 by Kb4iuj Link to comment
Spaceman Spiff
Hi kb4iuj, The layout is very loosely based on an Atlas HO plan called Oregon Pass line. See post 5 for the image. I do have a small intermodal facility ( not a recent pic attached) Just not enough room for everything I want lol. The majority of the track is atlas flex. I used Kato for the switches, intermodal and station areas. Spiff Edited October 10, 2015 by Spaceman Spiff Link to comment
Spaceman Spiff
Just starts tinkering with the video monitoring of hidden yard using a baby monitor infrared system. I wish the track work was better under there. Spiff Edited October 20, 2015 by Spaceman Spiff 2 Link to comment
railsquid
Baby monitor... hmm, now there's an idea... especially as we have an actual baby... ("Oh, baby is all grown up and the baby monitor is surplus to requirements? I have an idea...") Link to comment
cteno4
Great reuse and many are good at low light levels! I've been looking at some of the nice rf security camera/monitor systems to plunk around the club layout in interesting places and use the rotating and split screen functions of the monitor for an interesting public view of angles they can't see. Spaceman Spiff
I'm sure there are better quality systems out there. I bought this one used for $40 off a local online classified system. I may look for a better one down the road. Jeff, I'm sure your viewing public would enjoy a different view. kvp
I would use wifi based security cams with embedded IR leds. Digital quality, interference free, need only power wires and the pictures can be displayed on a monitor in any arrangements. (and the wifi is also good for any onboard cameras and wireless throttles) Some of the chinese hd ones are smartphone quality even in the IR range and have a lower price tag. ps: personally i would avoid hidden storage as much as possible, since a nice and sceniced visible yard looks way better (but they do come handly if space is tight, so it wouldn't be possible to run a realistic service pattern by building at least two visible stations/yards) Link to comment
Spaceman Spiff
Hi kvp, I looked at the wifi systems but didn't want spend the money taking a chance that they wouldn't work. The system I got is wireless and cheap with a small screen size. My layout room isn't large so the hidden yard was a option I could use to have more trains on the layout. I know it's not ideal but it works. I used every inch possible to put in as much track as I could. Lol Spiff Link to comment
railsquid
My "hidden" yard, when I get round to building it, will feature an underground metro station, as it's on a shelf so the front part will be visible, and why not? 2 Link to comment
Spaceman Spiff
Things are coming to an end. Essentially the major layout build is done almost 5 years to the start date. I just need to do bit of ballasting touch ups and we're pretty well done. Added lights to both station areas and curtains to hide all my junk. Only scenery details to go. I'm going to see if I can add track signals next. Spiff Edited March 13, 2016 by Spaceman Spiff 6 Link to comment

beakaboy
Spiff. That's a very impressive layout. well done! I love that kitset truck car carrier in the last photo. Very fiddly to build. Are the yard type floodlight towers a kit. Look really cool. 1 Link to comment
Spaceman Spiff
Thanks Beakaboy, I'm very lucky to have a great friends that are excellent modellers that enjoy building those kits. I'm not patient enough or talented enough to build those types of kits. The yard tower lights are Tomix N 3205. I got them from Locohobby (yes a shameless advert for David lol). Spiff Link to comment

Spaceman Spiff
It took me 5 years from table completion to almost done. After each work session I took pictures of the work completed. I took about 600 pictures. If you have 7 minutes to kill and you're bored,,,,,,, https://youtu.be/sIYcOMh-xTk Spiff 6 Link to comment
