JR 500系
Hi Guys! Suddenly this quesiton popped into mind... The same thing happened when i was into Lego... Boxes take up way too much space, and they look way too GOOD to be destroyed and thrown away! I took some time to sort out my empty Tomix/ Tomytec boxes... Look at the mess before! What i did was i throw, yes throw away, the Tomix boxes... And cut out and flattened the Tomytec ones as the graphics on the Tomytec ones are really too good to be thrown away... Something which i learnt when i was into Lego and all my Lego boxes are still with me... Share your ideas and photos please! Link to comment
bill937ca
I keep my Kato and Tomix boxes. But Tomytec get thrown out as I can`t see putting a Tomytec kit back into the box once its assembled. Most of my boxes are in a big cabinet and a few under the layout. But there are some Tomytec, in particular that never been opened. Oh, and there is another pile back by the old work desk. :) Link to comment
marknewton
I throw them out. Once I've added the detail parts and applied the transfers, I can't see any need for them. I keep the instruction sheets for reference. The completed models live in a display case at home, or travel to the club in a customised carrying case. (One day they'll be able to live permanently on the home layout... :) ) Cheers, Mark. Link to comment
Guest Closed Account 1
Empty jewel boxes and package boxes get hoarded into larger empty hoarded boxes and hoarded/stored in closet. It's for that just in case I want to sell them day, having them in their original boxes will yield a higher value than a loose box-o-trains. I guess I can trash the Kato basic 3-car boxes since the whole train fits into it's own book case. Empty jewel boxes are also used for the less fortunate trains that are safer stored in them like the T-Gauge, Thomas, and cleaner cars. Edited April 19, 2013 by Webskipper Link to comment
bill937ca
I keep all my jewel boxes and train cases. Just some building boxes get chucked. Link to comment
JR 500系
Yes i believe all the jewel cases, book cases or even the basic sets cardboard boxes for trains should be kept, as in the event one might want to sell them, the case is very important to not only yield a higher cost, but also lets it easier to be sold. Also, if the book case/ jewel case for the train is thrown away, where would one put the train back into? For the Kato buildings, i kept them too, as the Kato buildings are usually completed kit buildings in jewel cases, hence in the event one might want to sell, it can be easier to be kept back into it's original jewel box and thus yield a better price. And I'm doing the same as Skipper, placing smaller boxes into larger ones as this really reduces spaces. Tomix boxes are usually poorer in quality, as the plastic sheet tends to cramble as it is thinner and weaker. bill937ca has a good point there, Tomytec kits are built and thus after building it's highly unlikely to be placed back into the boxes. Even if one is selling Tomytec, it would have to be sold as completed built sets. Luckily for me, i only have about 15 train sets, so only about maximum 15 book cases. I cant imagine brothers here with 100+ train sets... One would need a Bookshelf to house them all! Link to comment
KenS
Jewel cases I keep, although I'm probably going to dump them eventually. What came in them were freight cars mostly, and those are in green Kato train cases now (I buy empty ones for that). Jewel cases for Locos I keep (and usually keep the locos in them). Boxes for most structures get recycled once the building is on the layout. I sometimes keep one and use it to store spare parts and instruction sheets from multiple buildings. Link to comment

I believe so too, the book cases are especially meant to be kept to put the trains into, they are of high quality because of that reason. You pay for that as well when you buy a train! I can't remember whose exactly, but somewhere on the forums I've seen pictures of someone who has multiple bookshelves full of trains. :) Link to comment
Claude_Dreyfus
All my locos and stock are kept in their boxes... The book sets live on a couple of Ikea (Billy) bookcases and look really neat. The others live in a couple of drawers. Road vehicles are kept in a large box produced by 'The Useful Box Company'. All their boxes...along with emptied building and kit boxes either get slung...or get made into something else. H0 stuff lives in a wardrobe...there seem to be trains all over the house!
