macdon
Thats right Ken - extruded foam is better. I am using styro-skin for the basic beaded styrofoam material - it provides a thin covering thats stiff. Working on mountains at the moment....... Mardon Link to comment
katoftw
Just went through the topic and saw the questions about the direction. Wouldn't you just swing the feeder track (S62F) 180 degrees to switch the polarity if the tracks. Rather than cutting wires or making new plugs. Link to comment

macdon
I hacked the 23-103 tapered end platform to fit. I shaved about 1-3/4" off of it and glued it to the 23-110 roofed platform. I wanted to integrate 2 end platforms to the single roofed platform so hacking one end platform was my only recourse. Mountain #2 is also done and just waiting on some WS foliage before tackling both mountains. Also doing some work on the freight yard. Mardon 1 Link to comment

macdon
Thanks Jeff! First sign of foliage ever on this layout. Need to add guardrails on the road. Mardon 1 Link to comment

macdon
Thought I'd ask a question...... What is the common ground cover in rural freight yards? I see mostly ballast ....... soil, ground, etc.? Mardon Link to comment
Densha
Ohh looking very good Mardon! I presume you're using woodland scenics foliage? You probably already knew but they have some other colours and variations too. Now everything is of the same colour and height so it looks slightly unrealistic. Not that I could do it better than you, but just a thought... Link to comment

Its the first time for me doing these scenery stuff so just trying to get the hang of things I guess. Just finished covering the 2nd mountain ......... yup, definitely need some variants :) Mardon Link to comment
katoftw
For a first timer. You are doing a pretty good job. I've never done scenery before. But if my first attempt is as good as yours. I'll be happy. Link to comment

macdon
Thanks Ken - seeing a lot of layout videos does help. Some are really very inspiring! I made a small extension to park my commuter trains instead of just leaving them on the layout/station. Question - is there a rule in Japan regarding how commuter trains park in a yard? Do they park by reversing? Mardon Link to comment
KenS
I'm not aware of any rule. Here's an example (Google maps) of a yard used for commuter trains. It looks like it could be entered by a reverse move of an inbound train after stopping at the station, and exited by reversing out of the yard then pulling forward into the station to head outwards. This one, on the Chuo line on the other side of the city (Google maps), is exactly reversed, suggesting the same operating pattern. In contrast this one used by the Yamanote line (Google maps) is going to be entered from either direction depending on which way the train is running. Link to comment
macdon
Thanks Ken. I decided to relocate on the right side of the layout, so like the freight trains - the commuters park reverse. I forgot that I would have a road on the left side that would hit right smack to the yard thus was a good reason to relocate. Mardon Link to comment
macdon
I thought I'd take a break from working on the Shinkansen oval layout to work on my 3'x7' freight/commuter layout...... Added backdrop and painted the foam to ground color. Mardon 3 Link to comment
Mudkip Orange
What's an updated track plan look like now that you've swapped stuff around? Link to comment
macdon
What's an updated track plan look like now that you've swapped stuff around? Below was the original track plan: Green - freight line Blue - commuter line Red - double crossover After the revamp, it now looks like this: Yellow - new changes Mardon Link to comment
macdon
Just when I was barely starting on the 2nd revamp when the 3rd revamp comes along ........arrgh. Totally redesign of the track plan and basically made it a lot simpler. My spare track bin is now overflowing because of this 3rd change and I see myself with a smirk on my face just imagining of what to do with those spares I really need to discipline myself to stick with this 3rd change and hopefully get to salvage some things (ie mountain) that I did on the 2nd revamp for this 3rd. It looks like its gonna work and far beats starting again from scratch, but we just dont know what changes could creep later on. Track line would be shared by freight and a commuter service........maybe. Hah! Mardon Link to comment
cteno4
Mardon, sometimes simpler is better! still looks great and scenery will be great! will look forward to what the spare track box becomes! jeff Link to comment
macdon
Thanks Jeff. Less is more, I guess. Spare bin left me various straights and curves, a double xover and 1 controller - its like it was destined for another layout! Mardon Link to comment
macdon
The GreenMax 2144 factory was probably one of the first structures I bought last year when I started the hobby for my first layout. However, it remained unbuilt and sealed even after 4 layouts later..........till now. With the 3rd revamp of this freight layout, hopefully I could finally find a place for it.
