Chuo Line EF64-1000s?

According to our friend Wikipedia, the EF64-1000 was constructed for, and used on, the Jōetsu line, whilst its earlier cousin the EF64 was mainly used on the Chuo. However, I have recently seen a video allegedly of the Chuo line, but with a double-headed container train hauled by a pair of EF64-1000s. Is this possible? Are/were the later variations a sight on the Chuo line?

Anyone here able to shed some light on this?

Many thanks!

Claude I think EF64s are used to pull those gasoline trains up the Chuo Line to Nagano. Not sure about container trains. Maybe an EH200 wasn't available or something. Can you post the video?

Link to video?  I would imagine that EF64s get distrubuted as power requires and not fixed to any one line even though thye may have been constructed for that line a long time ago.  Was this supposed to be in Tokyo or outside Tokyo?  Also as the newer locomotives get put into service older ones get consolidated and moved to different operating areas.

That's more than likely it, I would assume.

This station is a fair distance from Tokyo...far enough for any trains to pass through to be only for the Chuo line.

There is a good chance that EF64-1000s can be drafted onto Chuo services to cover for unavailability of more usual motive power. It could be that the video was a lucky catch.

The main purpose of my question was to see if I could justify a couple of EF64-1000s for my fleet!

I would say, yes, you can have EF64 1000s in your fleet.  Looking at where that station is, JRFreight probably uses the 1000s because they can be MUed which is an advantage when you may need more than one locomotive on an ocassional basis, for instance a train that is more loaded than normal.  I've also seen myself EF64 1000s all over the west side of Tokyo, ie, the outer loop and Tsurumi freight areas.  So I'm going to say your safe in using them.

Not sure that is what I wanted to hear!! Now I'm going to have to locate some EF64 1000s...preferably in their unique zig-zag livery.

Thanks all...something else to add to the ever growing shopping list!

Hello Mr Dreyfus,

Yes, many EF64-1000 service Chuo Main Line.  You can seach Google images using these topic:

中央線EF64-1000

甲府EF64-1000

The color scheme dependent on age.  For example:  EF64-37 has lived for many years on Chuo line in brown color.  Many EF64-1000 series remain in fresh blue and white, but blue and cream is historic.  You will find some occasion of train using two EF64 together.
