That first one is interesting. Have you been to one? I'd be tempted to go. On a related note, is anyone here who is residing in Japan a member of a club (model or prototype) there? I know there's the Japan Railfan Club (http://www.jrc.gr.jp/index.htm) . I think if I went to one of those bars, I'd want to meet a member of a club like that, maybe a retired railway employee who'd seen it all and had some good stories . I'm disappointed, but not surprised I guess, that the article doesn't explain the significance of kiha.

No, I've never been to one, but a live house that I once went to had a track layout. I think that the real dyed in the wool railfans drop into the smaller well equipped train shops and chat with the owners. Sorry, I just haunt the platforms and shoot trains. Not so much recently. using my kozukai to buy small trains lend to my students.

[The Next Station Is...]

On my last trip to Japan I wanted to visit Nuagra Curry (http://medmonds.com/niagara-curry-train-restaurant-tokyo) but couldn't work out Shibuya station for getting to the right line. Does anybody know the quickest way to get to the right part of the station from the Hachiko exit?

According to the site you have to take the toyoko line. Sadly this line has been moved to the underground station east of the main station. My guess would be that the quickest way is to go under the railway underpass north of the station and then just go down to the subway. The toyoko line should be there at the fukutoshin line platforms.

Next Station, no doubt this station is a maze.  I'm sorry but I'm not at all familiar with it.  I'd just go into the station from whatever entrance you find and try to follow signage to the Tokyu platform.  Be sure to take a local and go to Yutenji.  The curry shop looks cool.

 

kvp, are the Tokyu platforms and the Fukutoshin Line platforms the same thing, or are they just near each other?

On 16 March 2013, the 1.4-kilometer section of Shibuya to Daikanyama was switched to the underground track which connected to the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line at the underground platform formerly used only for Fukutoshin Line and the through service to the Fukutoshin Line was started. The Shibuya terminal on the ground was closed. On the same day, the through service to the Hibiya Line was discontinued.

It seems that the Tokyu Toyoko and the Tokyo Metro lines are now joined and accessible from the 5th basement (!) floor. JR East's station map of Shibuya luckily does a reasonable job of pointing out where the steps to get down there are.
