was sent this interesting picture  recently

 

a former iso container now retired to storage purpose

 

when did these boxes start to appear on the market and were they ever conveyed on rail services in Japan ?

The Japan Line was merged with another steamship company in 1989 to become Navix, which was later merged with Mitsui OSK.  Given the 1989 date, so soon after the breakup on JNR, I doubt these containers were ever used for railfreight traffic.

The 100 series KoKi introduced in 1988 was the first to carry ISO containers, wasn't it? Or was it one of the later cars in that series?
