Elaborate Storage Yard - Help

A year or two ago, there was a thread with pictures of an elaborate N-scale storage yard.

 

It had to be close to the size of a sheet of plywood (4'x8') with an engine service facility off to one side, and rather large sidings on the other.  I recall there being a full length M250, Cassiopeia, Rainbow Express and several others.

 

I've been searching the forums, but I just cannot remember where this was posted.

 

Does anybody remember where this thread may have been?  Or have it bookmarked?

Can someone help identify the structures near and around the turntable? Are those Japanese structures or American? I don't remember seeing them except maybe for the engine shed which may be a Greenmax structure. Thanks!

The round office building is quite nice and ive never scene it before. I'm guessing it's some rarer euro model, just doesn't quite look scratch built, but perhaps is is considering the work that want into the mega trusses.

 

The long inspection platforms have been made by bachmann (fueling and sanding set) and by a couple of smaller us companies. Ill try and dig out the ones I have to see if any match.

 

The blue roof engine shed is the the tomix engine shed.

 

The traveling crane looks to be the Walthers.

 

The sanding tower may be a bachmann, but they look bigger than I remember so maybe HO scale?

As Jeff points out, the building left of the turntable is the Tomix 4012 "Locomotive House", or rather a pair of them joined end-to-end, and they've been repainted:

The buildings at the far end (second photo below) are Kato.  At the edge of the board is the "Wood 2 Stall Engine House" (23-225_and to its right a pair of the "Long Engine House" (23-300) have been joined into one structure. All reapainted to be consistent with the other railroad buildings.

The electric substation (third photo) is Tomix's 4023 "Substation (sectional)", but there is more of the girder-work next to the building than comes in one kit, so I suspect multiple kits were used.  The pylon next to it is likely from the Kato set made by Heljan (23-401), although there are others (I've made the Kato ones, and this looks like them).

I don't recognize the brick building next to the turntable, althuough it has the coarse look of a Tomytec structure.

 

I also don't recognize the roofed traveling crane (left front in the first picture), however I don't think it's based on the Walther's Heavy-duty crane. While similar, the crane structure looks different.

 

Nor do I recognize the two peaked-roof inspection-pit buildings, but they could be any steam-era single-track engine shed.  And that office building (which is beautiful) does have the look of a European kit, but not one I'm familiar with.

 

Overall, it's a very nicely done diorama. I want to do something like this someday, and have since the original thread on the topic came up.  It's a great way to display trains without looking like that's all you're doing.

Do you plan on using prototypical track spacing (1.25") or the thumb rule?

 

Thumb rule is, track spacing wide enough to get you're thumb between the parked cars.

Thanks Ken and Jeff for the info on the structures. I agree the diaroma is awesome and a good way to display trains. I am guessing the structures were carefully selected to ensure that his diorama can be enclosed in a display case.

 

I was also wondering about the size. It does not look 4 feet by 8. It is more like 3 by 6?

Y'all oughtta consolidate these threads with the single title "Elaborate Storage Yard." Admittedly, everyone overlooked "yard trusses" because it sounds like a thread about construction techniques as opposed to HOLYCRAPTRAINS

Well, the origional thread was amout making trusses. Good to have two threads with each topic as if all blended together the the making trusses gets lost.

 

Both are there now for each topic and it was refound quickly with just posting a question.
