Is there an easy motor test?

I just got some trains and don't have the ability to run them just yet.. I just want to make sure they work.. Is there an easy test that does not require track/transformer etc..

 

For slot cars one need only use a 9V battery and that turns the motor and lights any lights.. Is there an N scale equivalent?

 

Something quick and dirty?

DC same principles

 

 

DCC need to isolate pickups and apply battery voltage to motor leads.
