On the Japanese trains with windows at the front (and/or rear...)--are those reserved or extra-cost seats? Or is it just an open area for people to stand in?

 

I guess it could be irritating to grab a seat there to look forward and then have the train reverse...

On the Ltd. Express Romancecar you can try to reserve the front but I've also heard its first come first serve.

 

 

 

I will be doing this 2 day side trip from Shinjuku in September with the family.

I looks like the driver only has room to sit down, not stand, in both of those cabs.

We have a video here at the forum that shows how the engineer gets into the cabin of the train, I can't seem to find it but Bill posted the thread.

It is very small opening to get into the cab.
