Sacto1985
I saw this video of the once-per-day Max Toki train that goes non-stop between Tokyo and Niigata Stations, done by YouTube contributor raraemondayo777: The fact this can be done makes me ask this question: has JR Tokai every studied the idea of a true non-stop Nozomi train service that goes all the way from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka Stations? (e.g., No stops at Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya and Kyoto stations.) Or it is due to the station platform design--not to mention the large number of passengers boarding and disembarking at Nagoya and Kyoto Stations--mitigate against this idea? Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
The time saved by a nonstop run (with slow running through the intermediate stations) through would likely be cancelled out by the lost patronage. The operating diagram (train pathing) would have to be modified also, for a single nonstop run a day it's likely not worth sacrificing other train pathings. Tokyo-Niigata doesn't have any intermediate city of the importance of Yokohama, Nagoya or Kyoto, save Omiya. Link to comment
Sacto1985
In short, the gigantic amount of passengers getting on and off the Shinkansen trains at Nagoya and Kyoto Stations is why we don't have a non-stop between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka Stations. After all, Nagoya is the third-largest city in Japan (thanks to the influence of Toyota just east of the city) and Kyoto is a large metropolis that is not only heavily visited by both domestic and foreign tourists, but also has a large number of companies located in that area.
