Bells

Hi,

Having watched several cab ride clips on youtube mostly of Japan but Ive also seen this in France too, when the unit is approaching a station for scheduled stop about 200meters before there is a bell and an intermittent clicking noise in the cab that doesn't stop until the unit has pulled up, anyone know what this is?

Thanks

That's the ATS system, it goes off when approaching a station where a train meet will occur on single track lines, or a terminal station.  The bell will first go off, the driver will acknowledge this with a button push, and the "kinkonkinkon" will continue until the train comes to a full stop. Been in use on JNR/JR lines since the mid-sixties.

I've tried to follow this a few times in videos, but I'm not sure I could see the operator's station and the signal to determine if I was correct or not.  A red signal would be ahead some distance.  The train passes over a sensor, and this alarm sounds.  The operator needs to acknowledge that with the ATS button, and if the train were to pass over another sensor ahead, close to that red signal, the emergency brakes would automatically apply.  Is that right?

AFAIK that is the correct procedure with the ATS system when approaching a red signal or an end of track. I've seen this in many videos and in a few simulator games that I've played as well.
