Nick_Burman
BB might like this, it's his former patch: I'm not American, nor am I old enough to have lived in that period but...watching this film gave one heck of a lump in the throat... Cheers NB 1 Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Thanks for that, always nice to see some of the big "blimps" in action. As I suspected, the interior shots were staged (the haircuts and facial hair are decidedly not circa 1961 regulation!), but the footage out the cab is remarkably clear. Interestingly, the PE terminal at 6th and Main was the model for the Shin-Keihan (later Hankyu) Railway terminal at Tenjinbashi in Osaka: http://uhankyu.com/ticketshinkeihan.html http://homepage3.nifty.com/uguisu-tuka/tenrokubiru.htm 6th and Main: http://www.pacificelectric.org/tag/alan-weeks-collection/page/4/ Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
Not American nor old enough either, but there's something about the earlier American passenger railways. I also really love the named trains and the promotional material of the day. I would've loved a trip on something like the Morning Daylight =) Link to comment
cteno4
thanks nick, interesting piece! thought it ironic for it to point out the new santa monica freeway ahead, one of the factors that wiped out the street cars eventually! my design partner grew up in the area and rode these as a kid at the very end of their reign. great stories. a friend is big time into LA rail history and done several exhibits on the streetcars and interurbans of LA. really amazing system. They keep working on trying to get a whole museum going, but thats a tough sell in these days to get the $$ together. They had donated a huge collection of LA tram and interurban models by a guy who did spectacular scratch builds and these were the heart of many of the small exhibits. cheers jeff Link to comment
