Where do you guys buy books on Japanese Rail

I'm curious about this.

I went to the railway bookshop in Sydney yesterday.  They didn't have a single book on Japanese Rail.  They said that such books are all in Japanese and impossible to source.  I picked up a couple of books on Sydney suburban trains in the 1960's and Sydney steam around the same time instead.

Do you guys know a mail order shop or physical shops that sell such books?

Warmest regards,

Boiler

I must say I haven't set foot in a Japanese bookstore in a foreign country in something like 20 years (I found most of them mediocre and depressing, like the Japantowns they are often located in), but perhaps the Kinokuniya at The Galeries on George Street may be the place to start.  You likely won't find any railway books on the shelves, but they may be able to order them for you if you have a title or ISBN.

Cant speak for Oz, I get th em at a few bookstores in NYC and DC, as well as HobbySearch, J-List, and Amazon Jp.

I thought I'd heard that the only Japanese bookstore in the DC area was closed.

The ARHS bookshop has - on odd occasions - stocked Japanese railway books, but only ever one or two copies that have sold very quickly. These were English language publications, is that what you're looking for?

Cheers,

I go to Kinokuniya whenever I have crib in town, it's a great bookshop, but they do not carry any Japanese railway books, only a small selection of Australian stuff, mostly coffee-table books. They do carry Japan Railfan Magazine, Railway Journal and The Railway Pictorial. They have occasionally had a few special editions from these publishers, as well as the odd Neko mook, but they only ever have a few copies, and they sell out fast. But the bloke who runs the Japanese periodical counter there is very helpful, and will order books and magazines if asked. The service is quick, they are usually in the store within 5-7 days.

Cheers,

The only Japanese (model) train book I have, not counting the catalogs, I bought in a Japanese book store in New York. I don't go there regularly though considering it's a 7-8 hour flight to get there ;)

Most from amazon.jp before the shipping rates went way up (use to have a deal first book was 1500yen then 300 for each additional so we would get together and do a big group order and get shipping down to like 400-500yen per book and very fast 3 day shipping). some off ebay now and then and whenever in nyc i visit Kinokuniya.

There's also a Kinokuniya store in San Francisco which I visited for the first time about one month ago. The New York store seems to have more books but there's not a lot of turnover. The SF store had a better selection of magazines plus new books that I haven't seen in NY.

There was also a small Kinokuniya at the Palisades Mall about 1/4 mile from my grandmother's in Valley Cottage (Nyack) but sadly it closed last August much to my annoyance. All they sold was freaking manga and Naruto doujinshi
