I watched a great doco on SBS, Sydney, last night:

 

Last Great Explorers - Thomas Blake Glover

 

For those of you who don't know, Glover imported and installed the first steam train in Japan, running on an exhibition railway.

 

Considering the first few days of our trip in October will be in Kyushu, Mrs_Ghan found it particularly interesting.

 

There is a brief section on Japanese rail.  Neil Oliver sums up Japanese rail quite nicely when he says, "They didn't just copy the idea of the train, they made it their own, they made it something new, like this, Shinkansen."
